The report, “ >Rajasthan girl ‘buried alive ,’ site turns shrine”, (Sept. 19) is a firm reminder that there are still two very different Indias. The fact that the place drew large crowds and that there were offerings of fruits, flowers, money and then prayers, is unbelievable. The fact that the child’s parents could get away by saying “it was her wish” and that she was a goddess, shows that this was a planned act. Civil society should come forward to resist this kind of barbarism.

The report sent shivers down my spine. The intolerable foolishness of people is what is taking the country back to the Neolithic Age. I am sure that superstition played a major role. Stern action must be initiated by setting the law in motion against these parents. It also shows that basic medical care and knowledge have yet to reach the interior parts of India, as the report says that the initial post mortem report indicated that the child had acute diarrhoea.

It is just atrocious. It is better that we spend our money on teaching people the basics in first aid and medical care than on bullet trains and space satellites.
