Bofors case

This refers to the report that the Centre has told the Supreme Court that it has decided to withdraw the case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi — an accused in the Bofors payoffs case. The decision is a nasty blow to justice. It is surprising that the failure to get Mr. Quattrocchi extradited, the revocation of the Red Corner Notice against him and his clearance by the Delhi High Court have been cited as reasons for dropping the case. The Centre’s decision questions the credibility of the UPA government.

The decision, although shocking, is inevitable as no useful purpose will be served by prolonging a case in which the investigating agency has bungled repeatedly at the behest of the powers that be and otherwise. The government’s admission before the Supreme Court that all efforts to extradite Mr. Quattrocchi have failed and the RCN issued against him has been revoked is shameful. The persons responsible for these lapses should be held accountable.

The withdrawal of the case against Mr. Quattrocchi should be viewed as a wise move insofar as it brings to an end the huge spending of taxpayers’ money. But can the failure to extradite an accused result in withdrawing the case against him? The Bofors case will surely be counted as the Congress failure to uphold justice.
