BJP and the Gandhis

As the top BJP leadership strives to level charges against the Congress party and the Gandhi family in the AgustaWestland deal, it needs to pause and wonder whether the charges will even stick (“BJP to continue attacks on Gandhis”, May 9). Nowhere have the Gandhis been indicted. The government must also realise the downside to its attempts to equate the helicopter deal with Bofors. Bofors united the entire Opposition against the Congress, with even the BJP and the Communists coming on one platform against the Rajiv Gandhi government. The helicopter deal involves both the BJP and Congress governments. By losing the general election in 2014, the Congress has already paid the price for corruption. Instead of harping on AgustaWestland, the government has to deliver on its list of tall promises.

It’s hard to believe how it was possible for an “invisible hand” — as the Defence Minister in this government alleges — to drive the deal even after the UPA’s Minister of Defence ventured to cancel the deal and impounded the security deposit of the firm. The Opposition has given the green signal to the government to get to the bottom of the deal. Therefore, it is strange why the Prime Minister, at an election rally in Tamil Nadu, had to bring up the Italian link. The BJP needs to come up with proof. It is morally bound to take strong action against corruption, having made it a point in the run-up to the general election.
