This refers to the articles “IM founder Yasin Bhatkal arrested,” & “It took six months to pin him down” (Aug.30). Though there could be a number of reasons why it has taken so long to nab the dreaded terrorist, it is still a prize catch for India. Such anti-national elements should be tried in a fast track court without any political interference.
I am at a loss to understand why the arrest of every dreaded terrorist is publicised by our agencies when it is obvious that such actions alert other terrorists and their patrons across the border, helping them cover their tracks. If this had been the CIA, MI6 or Mossad, they would have maintained the utmost secrecy and used the arrested terrorists to lure and capture their accomplices. India must also consider setting up special detention centres run by the NIA under judicial watch where arrested terror masterminds can be held in complete secrecy.
The various States and agencies which have booked numerous charges against him, his aides and associates must now entrust the task of framing charges against him to one special agency. This body should then leave aside contentious issues and focus on data that will constitute an open and shut case, and not one involving thousands of pages of charges, mounds of evidentiary data, hundreds of witnesses and other avoidable complexities. The aim should be to ensure a quick trial and conviction.
