True, persons of eminence have left their imprints in their chosen fields. It is nobody’s case that their nomination to the Rajya Sabha will bring great benefits to the nation, if the record of their predecessors is any guide (“ >Beyond the House: MPs and their roles ,” Open Page, Aug. 17). Sachin Tendulkar may not have asked for a parliamentary membership. But having received it, fairness demands that he does some justice for the remuneration and perks his office brings him.

It is a fact that Sachin did not ask to be nominated to the House. But he accepted the post. He has time to inaugurate malls and appear in advertisements. Doesn't he have the time to attend Parliament?

There can be no two opinions that the nominated members are meant to be ornaments of the House. At the same time, we cannot find fault with those who expect such members to attend the House at least on some days.

The treatment of nominated members of the Rajya Sabha as mere ornaments will render the constitutional provision on them superficial. They can highlight the pressing issues in their field of expertise. Their presence and participation will be significant.
