Bans on women

May 28, 2016 12:40 am | Updated 12:40 am IST

The Council of Islamic Ideology’s recommendation (‘World’ – “‘Husbands in Pak. should be allowed to beat wives’”, May 27 makes a mockery of civilised life and amounts to a violation and denial of rights to women for a peaceful life. Who is to adjudicate whether a wife’s act is disobedient or not and what a “light beating” is all about? What about similar acts committed by men? Who will “lightly” beat them in case they “disobey”? It all glaringly points to male dominance and male chauvinism in the name of religion.
