Bail for Sen

April 16, 2011 01:38 am | Updated 01:38 am IST

It is heartening to learn that the Supreme Court has granted bail to Binayak Sen. Its observation that no case of sedition is made out against Dr. Sen speaks volumes about the grave injustice meted out to him all along. It is unfortunate that while a host of blatant offenders challenge the system and manage to go scot-free, social activists of utmost humane nature like Dr. Sen are harassed by vested interests.

The Supreme Court's observation that no case of sedition could be made out against Dr. Sen comes as a great relief to not only social activists but also the general public. But I wonder how Dr. Sen was charged with sedition without any evidence.

This is not the first case in which a harassed person has had to go all the way to the Supreme Court in a system where the criminal justice procedure is harrowing. The exercise, in itself, is a punishment. Is the Supreme Court emerging as the first and sole court of justice in an increasingly repressive dispensation?

The grant of bail to Dr. Sen comes as a relief to his supporters all over India. He is a courageous fighter and social icon. We would like to see him get back to his mission with the same zeal.

The Supreme Court's observation that there is no proof of sedition against Dr. Sen is clear proof that the case was foisted on him with a political motive. Let us hail the decision of the highest court.
