Backward tag

While everyone in Punjab and Haryana is well-acquainted with the Jat situation, the article “A backward tag for the prosperous,” (April 4) would have been an eye-opener for others. Though the Jat community comprises only about one-fourth of the population in Haryana and Punjab, Jats own nearly three-fourth of the agricultural land. Also, thanks to the prosperity brought by the Green Revolution, they own a considerable amount of urban property. Politically strong, they find easy openings in government jobs. Therefore it is a travesty of the truth to label them ‘backward.’ By letting them cut into the overall quota for the backward, the political gains sought by the UPA will bear little fruit.
