Baby girls

April 20, 2012 01:15 am | Updated 01:15 am IST

I do not agree that India is no country for baby girls (April 19). Let us not come to conclusions on the basis of the actions of a handful, like Baby Afreen's father. India is about the vast majority of parents for whom their girl children are the best gift.

Does the large number of Indian girls foraying into all fields speak nothing of the country?

Our society is male-dominated. No law will have the desired effect unless our patriarchal mindset changes. Women themselves are largely to blame for their condition because they depend more on men and ill-treat their own race. Society is unscrupulous and women have virtually no protection. Not a single day passes without reports of crime against women. All these factors work against girl children.
