The controversy over the date of birth of Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh is ridiculous. The army is a well-oiled organisation that rarely fails. Gen. Singh is himself responsible for the confusion. The army authorities could not have had two different birth dates in the records without his knowledge. In 1977, the Army instructed its officers to produce age proof and amend the date of birth, if they felt there were any anomalies. Officers are, in general, advised to verify the accuracy of their records whenever they get an opportunity. It is most unfortunate that Gen. Singh could not find time to make the necessary change earlier, and waited to reach the highest rank to create a controversy and bring down the reputation of the organisation that ensured his elevation to the highest position.
