Attacks in Australia

The attack on an Indian in Sydney (Jan. 13) is alarming. The whole of Australia might not have turned racist overnight, but surely the government should focus on ushering in normalcy at the earliest.

The recent crimes in Melbourne against Indians are deplorable, inexcusable and shameful. However, we do not yet know the motivation behind these crimes. According to reports, the recent crimes were committed at night and without a witness in sight. We are all saddened by the tragedies. But claims that Indians alone have been victims of violence are unfounded. They distort the truth and do not contribute to the solution in Melbourne or to people’s understanding here in India. As a native of Melbourne and someone who works with international students on a daily basis, I have every confidence in my city as a safe and welcoming community.
