Attack on student

It is strange that we focus on boosting tourism in the form of the “Incredible India” campaign, invite foreign companies to be a part of “Make in India” and then turn on foreigners who live in India (“Attack on Tanzanian students: ACP suspended”, Feb.7). The incident in Bengaluru is all the more unfortunate after programmes like the India-Africa Forum Summit, where Africa and India have pledged to tap their demographic dividend.

The incident reflects not only a streak of racism in us but also exemplifies growing mobocracy in our polity. Mainstream political parties are also to be blamed for such vigilantist attacks as it is often their leadership which makes “irresponsible comments” and instigates people. Most assailants enjoy political patronage and escape punishment which sends out the message that one can indulge in such mass criminal acts and then seek refuge behind the anonymity and complicity of the community.
