Assassination bid

The assassination bid on award-winning journalist Hamid Mir in Karachi is reprehensible (“Hamid Mir, Geo TV anchor, shot at,” April 20). Terror elements in Pakistan have of late started training their guns on journalists, as was seen in last month’s attack on senior analyst Raza Rumi in Lahore. Thankfully, Mr. Rumi had a providential escape.

Mr. Hamid’s driver — who continued to drive even after the journalist was shot until they reached a hospital — deserves plaudits for showing great presence of mind. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government should address the issue of security of media personnel seriously and ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The bullet attack on Hamid Mir is symptomatic of a weak government. The ruling Pakistan Muslim League should probe Hamid’s brother Amir Mir’s assertion that Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt. Gen. Zaheer ul Islam is responsible for the attack and take measures against the ISI, if it is found guilty.
