In his column, Aamir Khan has exposed the evils and perils of domestic violence against women (June 18). It is shocking to note that 40 to 80 per cent of women in India are victims of domestic violence. There should be no place for patriarchal supremacy in a civilised society. Physical prowess need not and should not determine control over women.
It is a shame to subdue women. A society’s character is determined by the manner in which it treats its women. Empowerment of women through education and employment is only a starting point. Men should learn to treat women with equal respect and dignity.

Right from childhood, girls are taught to be meek. They are taught to accept the authority of their brothers, fathers and husbands. Very few children are taught to treat women equally. It has become difficult for women to say ‘no’ to oppression. Since movies are a powerful medium of influencing young minds, let us make intelligent and social movies which educate as well as entertain.
