The results of the recent by-elections in Andhra Pradesh are unfortunate. It is deplorable that people supported a party whose leader faces corruption charges. The confidence of the CBI, which is trying hard to prove the charges against Jaganmohan Reddy, will surely take a beating.

N.V.S Praveen, Kurnool

Freedom of choice is the basic tenet of democracy. Elections are the means to reject unacceptable policies. The Andhra Pradesh by-elections, although forced on the electorate, were an opportunity for people to judge whether transparency and accountability existed in the implementation of policies.

Democracy demands from the common man rational conduct, understanding of public affairs, independent judgment and unselfish participation through voting. Did the people of Andhra Pradesh display all these qualities in the by-election? We have to wait for the answer — till courts pronounce the final judgment.
