The points raised by Mr. Saaz Sakrikar (“New JEE format: right questions, wrong answers,” June 8) are valid. As a student who has attempted both JEE and AIEEE, and did not perform so well, I would like to point out that the major difficulty faced by aspirants is the vast gulf between the memory oriented board exam syllabus and that of competitive examinations which has caused the mushrooming of coaching centres and the commercialisation associated with them. The average student would be well served if there is a common high standard syllabus throughout the country for core subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, commerce and economics. The HRD Ministry should attempt to create a level playing field by providing an equitable syllabus for students before attempting to tweak entrance examination patterns.
