The photograph of a policeman evicting a woman protester for waving a black flag at Sonia Gandhi during her visit to Tumkur and the caption “Mum's the word” (April 29) point to a deplorable state of affairs. They reflect an authoritarian approach to peaceful dissent and the anxiety of the law-enforcement agencies to show that a VIP visit cannot evoke even a semblance of protest which can earn them a black mark.

It was shocking to see the image of a hapless woman being silenced by a policeman. What was the need to silence a person protesting peacefully?

Such incidents remain etched in people's memory and tarnish the image of the police.
