The article “Look, there's a world beyond 100%” (July 3) should serve as an eye-opener to all “demanding” parents. Their expectations have grown manifold, thanks to competition and meaningless marks awarded in board exams. There is no time devoted to honing skills. The lesson here is that children need not be needled to become only doctors and engineers. There is a whole new world that awaits them and there they can still do very well.

Having worked in the Silicon Valley for the last 15 years, I have come across many bright American students holding a non-science degree but who have excelled in software development or solved complex business problems. They have the aptitude and the right attitude — the mantra for success in a workplace. Perhaps Indian firms need to learn lessons from here.
