Anand fumbles

Despite being an experienced chess player, >Grandmaster Anand’s downfall in the Sochi chess championship tournament is disappointing (Nov.24). Since the moves of the players depend on their state of mind, it is crucial to maintain a mood of equanimity. One could observe a semblance of cynicism in Anand’s moves in the 11th game due to the series of defeats. This is indeed a tough phase in his career.

One need not feel dejected for Anand as he has lost to the world champion. In a cricket-frenzied nation, Anand has quietly made the right moves to take this absolutely silent game of squares to dizzy heights. Let us hope that a phoenix-like Anand will emerge next time.

Chennai

Magnus Carlsen deserved to win this championship. But let him not forget the significance of the man he has beaten. Viswanathan Anand has given so much to the country and his fans all over the world to cheer about. I am proud that I am part of a generation that has had the honour of watching Anand play great chess.
