Of late, BJP leader L.K. Advani has been talking through his hat (“Angry Sonia puts Advani on back foot,” Aug. 9). His description of UPA-II as “illegitimate” in the Lok Sabha, his subsequent retraction in the face of a strong opposition, and his latest blogposts betray a sense of desperation and dejection. His political innings is over. He has the least stake in his party as well as active politics. Heated exchanges and repeated disruptions on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament are clear indicators of what lies ahead.

Mr. Advani’s understandable attack on UPA-II was effectively tackled by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. However, one cannot deny that crores of rupees are spent on winning votes. It is a shame on Indian politics that governments survive by bribing voters.
