It is easy for armchair activists to express favourable arguments against abortions (“A tricky debate on abortion”, Aug. 3). Do they realise the practical difficulties a family faces when it has to bring up a child with disabilities? For example, if the parents are poor, the task ahead is almost impossible to imagine. When poor families are unable to meet most of their basic needs, how can they give such a child all the care it requires? Some things look good on paper but don’t work in reality. I feel that it is the mother who has the right to make a decision on undergoing an abortion. The law and the government must keep a distance.
