The passing of Rangabashyam marks the end of an era of pioneers in modern specialised surgery. His legacies are excellence in teaching and patient care, and a visionary outlook. The Madras Medical College should create a professorship in his name so that his contributions are remembered.

I was a student and house surgeon during Rangabashyam’s stint at the Thanjavur Medical College. Dr. N. R. (as he was affectionately called) was very popular among students and doctors. I remember him as a professor who encouraged students.
