A salute

I salute the courage of Sushmita Banerjee who lent her support to the emancipation of women in Afghanistan despite threats to her life from the Taliban. Her brutal assassination reinforces that the Taliban is against women’s progress.

Although the Taliban targeted Malala Yousafzai for her efforts to spread education among the women of Pakistan, the young girl was not deterred. Similarly, the outfit cannot stop women’s progress by killing progressive writers like Sushmita.

Although the Taliban has been removed from power, Afghanistan has a long way to go before ensuring the empowerment of women shackled by a parochial and conservative society.
