The political parties which opposed FDI in retail but helped the UPA government defeat the Opposition motion in the Lok Sabha by either voting against it or staging a walkout are guilty of letting the common man down. Their argument that had they supported the motion, the BJP would have gained an upper hand is not valid because the government would not be in trouble even if the motion was defeated.

The SP and the BSP’s ‘politics of boycott’ was anti-democratic and unconstitutional. Such actions go against the will of those who elect leaders to represent their interests in Parliament.

The Law Commission and others working on law reforms should come up with a solution to stop manipulation of people’s will.
