Save a life

The Karnataka Government needs to be complimented for introducing the Good Samaritan Bill (“Good Samaritan Bill awaits Governor’s nod”, Feb.3), a step to help accident victims that must be replicated across India. It is possible that the public may still be wary of the effectiveness of the bill given the way such provisions are followed in practice. Extensive awareness campaigns need to be taken up, especially along the highways, educating the common man on the need to help accident victims within the “golden hour” and protection given to them from police persecution and civil or criminal liabilities. In India, reckless driving accounts for a major share of accidents. Heavy penalties should include suspension or even cancellation of a driving licence. The present “friendly” rules hardly make an impact. When motorists do not care about others’ safety, it is the duty of the government to ensure road safety.
