The poor response to the 2G spectrum auction has proved the reality of market dynamics and a lesson for those who estimate the gain/loss based on mere presumptions (“Blame game begins as 2G auctions end in a disaster,” Nov. 15). What matters is the basis for estimation, formulation of systems and procedures by professionals in the government and their implementation by proper governance in a transparent manner by the ministries and departments concerned. No private entrepreneur will venture into a loss-making business.

The report is baffling. The auction as per reports could not fetch even a fourth of what was estimated by the government. One wonders where the figure of Rs.1.76 lakh crore estimated by the Comptroller and Auditor-General and over which there was a heated debate both inside and outside Parliament came from. Given that many cases have been filed by the CBI in the matter, it may be difficult to deny the allegation of irregularities in the process of allotment of 2G spectrum. Auction or no auction, what is important is a steadfast commitment to transparency and fairness in the procedures, which will not give room for criticism and allegations of corruption.

Post the auction flop, there is a concerted attempt by the (business) media to blame the CAG and anyone else who points to the huge 2G scam unleashed on the nation by the unholy business-politics nexus. This is ridiculous. If the auction failed, let the government look at business cartels which operate so openly in this crony capitalistic nation.
