It would be foolish to conflate a few isolated incidents but to dismiss them as aberrations would be to deny the prejudice Muslims face across Europe.
A British Minister walks out of a Muslim constituent’s wedding protesting against segregation of male and female guests; a prominent moderate Muslim scholar, Tariq Ramadan, is hounded out of not one but two separate jobs for hosting a show on an Iranian television channel; aggressive right-wing campaigners in Switzerland demand removal of minarets from all mosques; and French President Nicolas Sarkozy calls for a ban on wearing burqa in public.
These incidents, occurring within days of each other in recent weeks in different parts of Europe, have coincided with a rash of new books portraying European Muslims in the darkest possible colour. Their alarmist tone has reminded many of the sort of things once written about European Jews.
Are these simply isolated events? Or is Europe in the grip of a new wave of Islamophobia?
First, the books described by writer and critic Pankaj Mishra in a long polemical article in The Guardian as works of “Eurabia-mongers” who believe that Europe is about to be “over-run” by Muslims with at least one American writer claiming that they are already “conquering Europe’s cities, street by street.”
A common theme running through these books is that Europe’s 53 million-strong Muslim population is a “demographic time-bomb” which needs to be defused immediately if the continent does not want to end up as “Eurabia.” The solution is simple if stark: keep Muslims out of Europe and, if necessary, throw them out. Some of the suggestions on how to deal with the Muslim “problem” amount to ethnic cleansing.
For flavour, consider this chilling passage from Canadian commentator Mark Steyn’s book America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It: “In a democratic age, you can’t buck demography — except through civil war. The Serbs figured that out — as other Continentals will in the years ahead; if you can’t outbreed the enemy, cull ‘em.”
American writer Bruce Bawer’s new book Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom, which has been hailed as “an essential wake-up call” for the West (New York Times Book Review called it “unquestionably correct”), is a vitriolic attack on European liberals, including sections of the liberal media, who — it argues — have been driven by a combination of fear and political correctness to appease radical Islam at the cost of their “most cherished values.”
And then there is American journalist Christopher Caldwell’s Reflections on the Revolution in Europe: Can Europe be the Same with Different People in it?, which likens the “threat” to Europe from Muslim immigrants to the situation in Russia on the eve of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. If anything, there were “probably fewer Bolsheviks in Russia in 1917 than there are Islamists in Europe today,” Mr. Caldwell writes. He warns that Europe is in danger of losing to its Muslim minorities what, in effect, is a “clash of civilisations.”
The book has been widely acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic, a measure — as Mr. Mishra points out — of how such toxic anti-Muslim views are becoming increasingly mainstream, often lapped up even by liberal opinion-makers. It is against this background that there has been a temptation among Muslims to see a “pattern” in the events mentioned in the beginning of this article. “Pattern” or no pattern, they do indicate how fraught the mood is.
Take the “stop-the-minaret” campaign in Switzerland. The European skyline is dotted with domes, spires and minarets but it says something about the current climate that for the first time such a public campaign has been launched. More than 1,00,000 Swiss are reported to have signed a petition in support of the right-wing Swiss People’s Party’s demand for a ban on minarets forcing the government to call a referendum in November.
Campaigners say a minaret is a “symbol of Islamic power” and amounts to an “ideological intrusion” into the Swiss way of life. “They are symbols of a desire for power, of an Islam which wants to establish a legal and social order fundamentally contrary to the liberties guaranteed in our constitutions,” Ulrich Schuler, an SVP MP says.
Muslims, however, believe that it is not a campaign about how a mosque should look like but a veiled prelude to demanding a ban on mosques themselves. “Today, they want minarets to be banned — tomorrow they will say they don’t want mosques in their midst,” a Muslim leader is quoted as saying.
So far, though, the Muslim reaction in Switzerland has been muted but there are fears that if a ban is approved in the referendum, it could be seized by militant groups to whip up Muslim sentiment.
The sacking of Mr. Ramadan, a Swiss national, from his jobs as community adviser to the city of Rotterdam and visiting lecturer on religion at Erasmus University, has caused a great deal of surprise. Quite apart from the fact that he is one of the most respected moderate Muslim voices in Europe (hailed by some as an “Islamic Martin Luther King”) who has been trying, in his own quiet way, to confront extremism, it is the grounds on which he was stripped of his posts that have raised eyebrows.
Mr. Ramadan was thrown out for “disregarding” Dutch public opinion over Iran’s “rigged” presidential election by refusing to give up a programme he hosts on the London-based Iranian television channel PressTV. In a statement that ironically sounded more like a missive from Iranian censors, his employers said he had “failed sufficiently to realise the feelings that participation in this television programme ... might provoke in Rotterdam and beyond.”
Mr. Ramadan claimed he had publicly condemned the repression of pro-democracy protesters in Iran and backed the campaign for “transparency and respect for human rights.” His programme, he said, debated a range of issues, including freedom and inter-faith dialogue, and challenged his critics to produce the “slightest evidence of support for the Iranian regime.”
There is a view that the PressTV show was simply a pretext for humiliating a man whom the European political establishment has always regarded with suspicion because of his ancestry. Mr. Ramadan’s grandfather was Hassan al-Banna, a controversial figure in radical Islam and one of the founders of Muslim Brotherhood, an influential Islamic revival movement.
This has coloured his critics’ reading of Mr. Ramadan’s argument for a “European Islam” which would combine Islamic teachings with respect for European laws. Some see in it what one British commentator called a “puzzling ambivalence.” What is often forgotten is that Mr. Ramadan’s ancestry also has a liberal strand: his granduncle Gamal al-Banna was a great Muslim reformist leader. Ultimately, though, it is not about Mr. Ramadan losing his jobs but about the message the humiliation of moderate Muslims like him will send out to those who are convinced (and have indeed been preaching) that the West will never trust Muslims, no matter how moderate. They will, of course, be delighted.
Meanwhile, in Britain, Jim Fitzpatrick, the Minister who stormed out of a Muslim wedding protesting against the “segregation” of men and women, has been accused of “cultural insensitivity” and, worse, playing the “race card” to appease white working class voters in the run-up to next year’s general election. The latter accusation came not from the local Muslim community but from a prospective Tory candidate Tim Archer, who said: “I can’t help but feel he’s playing a certain race card to save his skin at the next election. I think it’s a desperate strategy.”
Mr. Archer’s attack on a political rival need not be taken seriously and there is no evidence that the Minister is either racist or an Islamophobe (if that were so, he wouldn’t have been an MP from an area where 35 per cent voters are Bangladeshi Muslims). But the suspicion remains that his behaviour was not entirely innocent. He acted the way he did because (the denials notwithstanding) it is an open season on Muslims; and their “primitive” cultural practices have become a soft target for anyone looking for easy headlines in the “struggle” to protect the western way of life.
Mr. Fitzpatrick’s argument against gender segregation is valid but he was wrong to give the impression that Muslims alone cling to such a “strange” practice, as he put it. Separation of sexes at certain private functions such as services and weddings is believed to be common among Orthodox Jews, and some other religious groups.
It would be foolish to conflate incidents which may be no more than just local difficulties and blow them up into an anti-Muslim conspiracy. Yet to dismiss them as an aberration would be to deny the prejudice that Muslims face across Europe.

Every society has bad apples, however, that does not make the entire society bad. There have been numerous references to malpractices in Hinduism in this trail & being a Hindu, I accept it as our flaw. I do not claim to understand Islam, but I strongly believe that the fundamental scriptures must be really good, or else so many people would not have been attracted to it. Every religion has a fundamental goodness, & teaches brotherhood and peace in some way or another. The problem is in the interpretation of the texts & implementation of the same. This happens in every religion & this explains why one religion gets split up into several sects though the basic teachings are same.
I saw a comment on top where a muslim has converted from muslim to hindu ? Is it permitted in Hinduism ? because my ancestors were Hindus. then we converted to muslim. now i want to go back to hinduism , what is the procedure ? can anybody please tell me ?
Saiba
Its hard to change views, and it cannot be done with a few articles in newspapers and magazines. Certain views commented by few have been formed from years of seeing, hearing and reading reports that have always almost been unfavourable to islam. But I dont blame them cause even though I am a muslim and i read a report on terror or terrorist attack, the first thing that comes to mind is muslim terrorists. The cause for this is ofcourse muslims themselves. Majority of the muslims are moderates and dont raise their voice because of fear of retribution. My father had raised his voice and the local mosque did not allow us the rights to final prayers for him when he passed away, saying he was anti islam. If you have muslim friends, you will know what muslims really are and what islam is. I suppose those of you who have commented here do not have true muslim friends.
This Islamophobia, or any other issue is a game by the people in power to stay in power or gain more. We common people get carried away and take sides and fight among ourselves. But the need of the hour is mutual trust and actions reinforcing that.
Its always easy to find a reason to discriminate but hard to unite.
Let me first correct one very basic point that everyone is making by using The Government of Saudi Arabia as a model Islamic state. Saudi is ruled by a dictator. The Government of Saudi Arabia does not follow many of the core islamic principles and practices such as human rights, religious tolerance for people of other faiths, racism on fellow muslims from other south Asians countries etc. As far as I know, most of the muslim majority countries ( Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Algeria etc) are been ruled by opprressive dictators. I could not see any muslim country at the present time to be followwing the islamic sharia (islamic Law for governance).
Somebody commented here "Why is it the media doesnt brand LTTE ,Maoists ,Ulfa,IRA of Ireland and Eta of spain by their religion.".
Did these groups identify themselves with any particular religion?
Have they ever issued statements that people should follow certain religion?
Whether these groups were formed ONLY to spread a religion?
They had a cause other than religion. (Right or wrong is something different)
Muslims must take this as a wake up call as hatred is being generated against them all over the world. I dont blame the entire community but the fanatics for this.but on the other hand why the intelligent and educated people criticise it openly ? they fear death and they dont want to antagonise their own community. If they cant change them , it would be better for muslims to get converted to other religions and convey message to fundamentalist that if they continue like this ,the religion would end. I have converted from muslim to hinduism.
To Mr. Timothy and for all. If Allah is the creator and He is Almighty God then Of course the number of Muslims will outnumber any others. if this scares you people then GET SCARED.... what else can i say!!!!!.
Cultural conflicts between different groups is not a new problem that the world is facing. Expecting ever-lasting peace between groups is not as simple as writing down on a piece of paper. However, adverse reactions and isolation of groups is also not going to help make the situation better. Globalization has ensured that inter-mixing of races and cultures is imminent and in such times educating people about other cultures and tolerance towards them is the need of the hour. There needs to be a check on parochial pedagogy.
In Malaysia when the govt ordered a hindu temple to the demolished and relocated to a new area the local Muslims in the new area protested. they did not want temple to come up there saying it is against their religion Islam. To show their protest they adopted a macabre act. They killed a cow (which is sacred for Hindus) and dismembered its head and stood on its head. Will Muslims ever become cultured? Rajappa
One must not confuse religion and its interpretation by pseudo religious institutions & people. This occurs in all religion Christianity (the crusades), look at some of the ancient Hindu practices (sati, treatment of lower caste folks as examples). Unfortunately that is what is happening to Islam. Pseudo religious prophets and preachers have been misleading people. The problem is compounded when these institutions hold political and administrative power. Rather than condemn the average person who gets swayed by these propaganda easily let us condemn the institutions for bringing about such ill repute to all religions. Why not impose sanctions against these governments?
Every body is criticizing Islam. Yes, there is some truth in it but not all commnts are correct. Muslims are helpful. But we are controlled by our religion. I have taught my children not to blindly believe all that our religion teaches. But my brother says I am wrong. Like Hindsu and christians, there should also be an open though in a muslim home, that there may be a god or there may not be a god.
Mani has hit the issue on the head. Why is it that Saudi Arabia does not allow other religions to be practiced openly? Why don't they allow temples, churches and Gurudwaras? As long as Muslims unwilling to confront the double standards within their society, their arguments, even when substantive, will fail to find acceptance.
To everyone who is criticising Islam ,Islam itself means peace. Please spend sometime to understand what islam teaches.Islam teaches love and respect for one another. There is nothing like islamophobia in this world. The media plays a dirty and peverted role in spreading the muslim named terrorists and tarnish the image of the whole community itself. Why is it the media doesnt brand LTTE ,Maoists ,Ulfa,IRA of Ireland and Eta of spain by their religion. The media should start doing this and then this islamophobia will vanish from the hearts of people. The media should spread the message of harmony and peace and should nt target only one religion. The media and the press can play important and a vital role in spreading universal brotherhood and peace across the world.A religion teaches a way of living with your fellow human being. Its the media and the press to be blamed for spreading hatred amongst religion.I appeal to the press to condemn terror activities and not convict the religion. Moreover in todays world its important to live your life and stop poking your noses into others territories. Its high time the common man realises the hypocrisy of politicians and their vested interests.World will be a better place if everyone turns around look here and there and help the one in despair ,give food to the hungry ones, treat the one who is ill ,help the poor to get married, build homes for the homeless. If every country looks into its own matters then i believe nobody will have time to fight over the boundaries.Just Imagine how beautiful the world would be.You will never get to read crimes ,terror in the newspaper.I appeal to those who are in arms to stop violence and spend your resources in constructive ways rather than on arms.Stop killing innocents ,stop shedding blood of the innocent. No religion teaches to take innocent lives.Instead be strong and stand tall agains the one preaching violence and hatred.Islam should be read to understood and practised to feel what it exactly is about.
The only way to prevent a 'clash of civilizations' and consequent destruction of humanity is to move Muslim populations safely out of non-Muslim countries and make them settle in any Muslim country of their choice to practice their faith. UN can take this monumental initiative for the cause of World Peace. The Muslims cleverly use demography and democracy, without any regard to family planning measures, to outnumber others and establish their religion ultimately by terror and forceful conversions. A Muslim country like Saudi Arabia, or Pakistan, or Bangladesh, or Malaysia, or Egypt will never allow their non-Muslim population to live in peace. For a start, Europe and India can be relieved of this growing menace. India is also facing the terrorism of christian conversions, which needs to be addressed firmly.
These issues would not have been raised had they sound knowledge of Islam. Islamaphobia is nothing knew. Jews and Christians (people of the books) and all those other than them have always suspected Islam as a challenge to their religion and their beliefs. When all Islam did was to spread the message of one God and to believe in the hereafter. The same message which all religions starting from Adam,Noah,Abraham,Isaac,Moses,Jesus, all prophets before them preached.
As Allah (Elohah -Christians, Elohim - Jews, God) tells us in the Quran : People of the book! Come to a word common between us and you:that we shall serve none but Allah and shall associate none with him in his Divinity and will not take others as lords other than Allah'' - The same truth revealed to every prophet before Mohamed (PBUH).. If Muslims follow a certain way of life it is because that way of life is preserved without any change in the Quran and the teachings of the prophet, whereas the original text of most other religions have been lost. No one can deny anyone sticking to religious beliefs especially if they havent been altered one bit since the revealtion.
And it is every muslims duty to convey the message of Islam, to save mankind from what lies in the hereafter. All we're doing is advising you as to what the Quran advises us. Our only intention is to save you, like anyone would if they see someone at danger. Now if someone doesnt want to be saved, or does not like the message, it is perfectly alright. As all we can do is convey the message. It is upto you to accept it or not, but please do not consider us as a threat.
Islam means peace, and living with our neighbours in peace and love is something we are obliged to do.
What a joke?
Look at the plight of Hindus and Sikhs in Kashmir which is part of India.Even a little piece of land for making a guest house, for Hindu and Sikh pilgrims to a holy place in Kashmir, made a violent protests by these intolerant Muslims.
How many Hindu and Sikhs left in Pakistan or Bangladesh?
Talk about peaceful Islam!
Hasan Suroor's views in the write-up will be music to the ears of people indulging in Islamophilia. He presents Islamophobia as an idea that is self-evident and uncritical. There are many authors, Muslims included, who have dismissed as false the accusation that there is Islamophobia in the West. Suroor who blows up isolated incidents to suggest that there is Islamophobia is likely to be unaware of the equally strong charge that many Western leaders willing to appease Islam. The charge is not wholly unfounded. In 2007, the UN passed a resolution calling on all nations to 'combat defamation of all religions, Islam and Muslims in particular'. Earlier, the British government, in a bid to appease Muslim leaders, passed controversial legislation banning 'incitement to religious hatred'.
British writer Kenan Malik says obnoxious arguments of people like Canadian writer Mark Steyn no more make Western societies institutionally Islamophobic than the actions of Mohammed Atta (who piloted the plane into the World Trade Centre) make Islam an institutionally violent religion. An international public opinion survey conducted by Globscan in 2007, more than 75 per cent of people in Britain felt that there was common ground between Muslims and non-Muslims. It is puzzling to see people like Suroor remaining silent about anti-Western sentiments in Islamic countries. There was no outcry in Islamic countries when Iranian president Ahamedinejad called for elimination of Israel. It was not a call from a crazy journalist like Mark Steyn but one from the president of a powerful Islamic nation.
In some the comments, there are references to women right in Islam and treating the women as second class citizens, which is baseless and the commenter is commenting without actually knowing the fact that it is the Islam who gave right and dignity to the women more than any other religion or even modern society where women are treated as the object. The falling marriage rate is glaring example of it. Gender segregation is common to all all culture to India. So it is nothing to do with the religion. Purdah also to a great extent is more of a cultural thing than a religious obligation. I think more than anything the world needs is love and compassion and accept each other with sensitivity and genuineness.
Every Muslim says islam is a religion of peace... but i think what they are talking about is the peace that would prevail if everyone in the world was muslim...converted either by force or be killed...
It is dangerous what they believe thier religion teaches.. for example most of them believe that they should kill or convert all non-believers to islam... which is scary... they want to kill rushdie for his book and the danish cartonist... in the name of religion they want to kill .. very scary... indeed... if we dont overpower the muslims then in the future we all will be slaves... to the muslim law... i have no idea what has to be done... :(
I would like to supplement Mani Ramamurthy's views. Somebody said that non-muslims who die in Saudi cannot be buired there. If this is true, is this tolerance?
I would like to supplement Mani Ramamurthy's views. Somebody said that non-muslims who die in Saudi cannot be buired there. If this is true, is this tolerance?
I read through some comments posted here. It is quite strange to understand the ignorance of some people. My request is, however busy you are, try to spend a few minutes to understand Islam. It only advocates peace and harmony. It asks a muslim to respect other faiths. It asks you to give food to your hungry neighbour even if he is a nonmuslim.I came across some comments about Arab countries.Keep your eyes wide open and look around. You can see all people, irrespective of their countries, religion, creed, colour, sex or education are welcome in these countries. They work and earn and support their respective countries' economies. in countries like Oman, you can see temples and churches. In true democracy everyone should have freedom to believe in and practice any faith of their choice.Islam doesnot allow men and women to mix.In fact it is to protect and honour the dignity of women.Blindly supporting the west is backfiring. Why were Indian students attacked in Australia? It was not because their religion is Islam!Though some people in the so-called developed countrie have white outsides, their insides are dark!
I don't understand what made one of my friends to write, 'all terrorists are muslims.'Are LTTE activists muslims, are ULFA activists muslims, are maoist workers muslims? Asking to bring down all minarets, or not allowing muslim girls to wear their head dress is not democratic. Can you ask all jews to shave their beard and remove their caps, can you ask christian nuns to remove their head dress, can you ask the sikhs to cut their hair? We will have peace only when we have true freedom. Whenever, in history, someone tried to dictate terms to others, there was breach of peace.Pleas allow muslims or any religion to live according to their faith. No true muslim can become a terrorist. Terrorists do not have religion.
without studying the teachings of Islam, all are blaming Islam .It is not the fault of Islam ,but the fault of muslim named guys doing all the ridicoulus things.Even all muslims are not aware of the full teachings of Muhammed (pubh ) and Quran. The islamic named but not islamic-educated persons are carrying out all the mischevious things to defame Islam. All Gentlemen, please study Islam. You will get IT.
I am surprised till now not a single Muslim has condemned Saudi Arabia's practise of not allowing other religious symbols to enter that country.Still they want freedom to practise their religion every where else. What hypocrisy? Please look at yourselves before accusing others of harassing you.
Why is that muslims have problems with every other religion, be it Hindus, Christians, Jews, Buddhists...
I wonder who is intolerant here.
Why is that everytime you hear 'a terrorist is caught' you guess him to be a muslim (and you'll be right 99.999% times)
Why can't you imagine a buddhist terrorist with a gun, or a hindu or a christian or a jew terrorist?
How long will it take us to realize the obvious truth?
How is it possible for prakashs, manis, sanjeevs, nicks, damians et al to comment on Islam withouth knowing what it is? This question has perplexed me since my school-days. People who arent aware of what Islam means, what it stands for, very liberally criticise it!
Democracy isnt the only way of governance( and people talk of democracy as if it's cure to all the evils!) Its never possible to have one set of governance for entire globe (its commonsense!!). We indians have been fortunate to have a democratic set-up with many rights. But it doesnt mean that the other parts of the world should also have same form of governance. So pls stop looking at muslim world with tinted glasses, and stop abusing the word "democracy". Muslims wherever they go, they mostly stick to their laid down norms of daily life, like staying away from alcohol, extra-martial affairs et al; whereas others easily get carried away with these things and they are called "integrated"! So the problem isnt muslims dont know how to leave in democracy, the problem is they dont know how to become shameless and indulge in hypocratcic society!
And you treat women equally? In "your" European countries you have women posing naked/half-naked for promoting any given product! This is equality in your eyes! Amazing!!! I agree that there are cases of muslim women being denied their due rights, but it doesnt mean that entire Islam is to be blamed.
People who till recently were burning the widows alive, are talking of Islam as something to be feared of? Letme tell you if u learn islam with open mind you will change your view in no time.
Regarding Saudi Arabia, its a country with its own well laid down norms. Its no point in complaining!
Backwardness? From my school days i have seen this "segregation based on sex", be it while the boys and students seating arrangement, or be it seating arrangement in our State Transport buses. I think people should take a deep-breath and analyse the benefits instead of using some fancy critcising words.
Its completely muslims' fault that people think that muslims should kill the kafirs!!! Many critics of Islam quote the Holy test out of context and prove a point or two which is nothing but false and false!
Now whom should we condemn. At the outset we should condemn the people who are spreading falsehood!
Well i cant go on answering each and every ill-logical, ill-informed comment. I request my muslim brethren to understand the sensitivity of time, and cater their maximum possible energies to remove misunderstanding of Islam. This is simple, if we follow the sunnath of our beloved prophet (pbuh), and its "dawah". Let's all single-mindedly dedicate ourselves to this goal, and alhumdulillah there's not a single place on this earth which will go against it. Dawah, my muslim brothers, requires no guns, no ammunations but only yourself.
And i request the muslim world not to get carried-away with terms like "islamphobia" etc. History is witness that Islam has not only survived against all possible conspiracies but also flourished. So neglecting them will be in the greater interest of muslims.

Hasan Suroor in this article is doing exactly what he thinks is very bad: "conflate incidents which may be no more than just local difficulties and blow them up into an anti-Muslim conspiracy." His arguments does nothing but perpetuate a culture of victimhood so deep-rooted in the Muslim psyche. He should have served the community well if he had highlighted issues that frees it from this siege mentality.
It is true that non-Muslims have lot of prejudices about Muslims just as Muslims have prejudices about non-Muslims. Some of the Western countries may not be free from such prejudices. But attributing the prejudices to a sort collective and irrational fear is ridiculous. Islamophobia is often used as an accusation to gag critics of radical Islam. As the British journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown (who is a Muslim) says: "all too often Islamophobia is used to blackmail society." I fear radical Islam and I oppose Islam as an ideology of political control because I love free speech and democracy. Can this fear be cited as an example of Islamophobia?
The article speaks of a few incidents that occurred across Europe recently to suggest that there is a pattern of anti-Muslim phobia in Britain, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands. What is wrong if the French President calls for banning burqa-wearing in public in his country which cherishes secular Enlightenment values of gender equality? What is again wrong if the British Minister, who walks out of a Muslim wedding party where men and women are segragated, highlights the 'primitive' culture of gender discrimination? Should we tolerate all primitive practices in the name of accommodating the sentiments of the communities practising them? If so, we have to tolerate caste system in Hinduism which India has outlawed.
As for Tariq Ramadan being fired as an adviser to the city of Rotterdam, his expulsion by the Dutch city (whose Mayor is incidentally a Muslim) was a reaction against his hosting a weekly TV show on Press TV which is financed by the Iranian regime. An Islamophobic society would not have appointed Mr. Ramadan as advisor in the first place. Neither would Rotterdam have elected Ahmed Aboutaleb as its Mayor.
Having lived in Australia for the past 10 years. I hear many people complain that Muslims don’t send their daughters to schools, Muslims don’t integrate into the wider society. Muslims don’t learn the local language and don’t give regard to the local culture. I don’t believe in what people say and I look at numbers. The Australian statistics show that there are more university graduate Muslim women than non Muslim Australian women. The same is true for Muslim men.
On my recent trip to Dubai, I was amazed to see how alienated westerners kept themselves to the local culture and language. They regarded themselves as superior to the local culture, language and law.
The vast majority of Indians I came across, respected the law of the land and spoke the local language and lot of them were Hindus. Majority of the Indians were lower to middle class people, with little education, still they manage to pick up the local language.
It is sad Islamophobia has began in Eurpoe. Who is the casue for this?. The answer is none other than islam religion itself. Islam does not want to coexist with other religions of the world. It has been using violent means to rootout other religions. It is time Islamic religious leaders understand this and start preaching love and affection to its followers.
Clearly, the writer is biased towards Islam. He has just cited a few examples which reflects the surface level of reality. He has failed in his attempt to convince the people against Islamophobia.
In fact, in a way he has created more awareness among readers !.
But in my opinion, radical Islam is flexing its arms across Europe.
The radical Islamists must first learn to be tolerant and respect the local culture. One cannot force upon his laws in a land where he is a immigrant.
The people must act quickly to this wake up call, before it is too late. The situation in India is no different.
While Mr. Suroor's concerns about increased islamophobia is legitimate, his portrayal of Tariq Ramadan as a "liberal" voice of islam is troublesome. Tariq Ramadan has unfortunately said one thing to liberal audiences and another to more conservative muslims. His support of stoning as a punishment is one. His views were characterized as "fascist" by a fellow european muslim Malek Boutih, who was the head of french anti-racism organization SOS Racisme. Finally, it would be helpful if Mr. Suroor were to concentrate on difficulties faced by all third-world immigrant in europe rather than his propensity for highlighting so-called "muslim" immigrant issues only.
Dear non-muslim brothers, Islam is the religion not just of code & conducts, prayers & fasting and pligrimage to Mecca. It is the religion which teaches from how to drink water to how to drain water and how to eat, what to eat and how to live in peace among fellow muslims and non-muslims. It is unfortunate that muslim brothers fail to read or equip themselves with the knowledge of their religion apply these teachings in their daily life. My small request is to you, as mentioned, the code and conducts or lifestyle of true muslim is not in volumes, a few no. of booklets is enough for you to understand the religion of Islam. It is available in all book stores or you can visit good islamic websites. And you can read and understand Islam in days of reading. With this you can question and raise doubt at your neighbour muslim of his conduct and violation from the teachings of his religion. It is the only way how majority community can mend the fellow muslims to the mainstream and live in peace. It is not worth to implement sanctions or denounce the rights by subjucation or referrendam and curtail the minorities, by which majority moderates of minority community are affected by few wrong doers in their community.
The average Indian so called secular politician should wake up like more and more Americans and Europeans. It is Islam vs America and Islam vs Europe now. Soon it will be Islam vs India, conducted from within India. Only a minority of Indian Muslims support this. But they get what they want because the moderate muslims are silent or scared. If a Hindu points out the muslim mistakes he will be called a fascist. Muslims themselves are responsible for their lack of education, high population growth, poor womens right records etc. Koran and interpretation of Koran needs to be corrected.
We have enough religion to hate each other , not enough to love each other--Swift.
We all love peace and do little that leads to peace.
If you want a change in this world, you be the change- Gandhi
Gandhi's saying is more apt to describe today's increasingly violent and restless world:
1.Wealth without work;2.Pleasure without conscience;3.Knowledge without character;4.Commerce without morality;5.Science without humanity; 6.Politics without principles;7.Worship without sacrifice.
The article written by Hasan Suroor is one of the best I have read recently in the Indian media. It is not an explanatory piece, but an amazing effort on Hasan’s part. Kudos. Now about the comments; about praying in Muslim countries, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Malaysia and Indonesia are the countries where non-Muslims can follow their faith without much fuss.
And about the cliché, “All Muslims are not terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims”. It’s unfair and racist as IRA of Ireland, ETA of Spain, LTTE of Sri Lanka were not Muslim groups, but still terrorist organizations.
We all know, woman in the West is nothing more than a commodity. Watch ads, TV shows, adult entertainment and you’ll know what I am talking about.
Well written article. But then you cant blame anyone in Europe or any other country except the muslim themselves for bringing themselves to this situation. The terrorists, the jihadis must realize the harm they are doing to their own communities. It is only after 9/11 the situation has come to the extent one is suspicious of all muslims... their religion, their creed, their culture everything against themselves. It is time all good muslims should join together to fight their brethern who have made living for other communities difficult beyond words. Muslims cannot survive byt killing other - there will be retribution sooner than ever.
Why should there be a rise in the phobia? Why is it finding an echo in the people? Why are we crying foul over symptoms of deep rooted fears that our own actions fan? Why do we lend our silent support to religious nuts? What have we done to prevent stereotyping? Why do we only argue with other religion people? Why isnt there a dialogue within? Why is this a problem only within our religion? Why do we claim all the rights in a different country but deny the same to everyone in our own countries?
While agreeing entirely that the reaction of Europe is called phobia by the author, does he want to look at what is happening in the core of the Islamic world - West Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan... Does it hold any thing resembling peace to the rest of the world? The fuming and fretting of the author seems to be confined to only when the Muslims are treated with some bias in the western world turning a complete blind eye to the atrocities committed by the fanatics on innocent muslims and other religions. It is a such a pity he gets so much space in a newspaper with an unlikely name The Hindu!!
The paranoia on both sides of the debate is a little exaggerated! Historically, immigrants have always been viewed as a threat initially. In America, the British viewed Germans as a threat to their society and were often discriminated against to the extent that the founding fathers went to a great extent to make English the unofficial language of the US. The Irish immigrants to the US were given a pejorative title and the little Italys that sprung up everywhere in the US after the huge wave of Italian immigrants, is a great example of racial segregation. However, most of these groups are well-settled and integrated into American society. Even in the 20th century in America, the Vietnamese, Chinese and Far East Asians were considered to be a great threat to American society! However, recent trends indicate that Asian Americans are the richest minorities in the US with very high levels of education and most Americans look at Asian Americans as positive role models.
Even in Europe, recent public opinion surveys revealed, for example in France, that 54% of the French people view immigrants favorably, while more than half of the muslims views themselves French first and muslims second. Although, the minorities in France have a long way to go, this is a positive first step in this direction. Even in Britain where racism tends to be higher than in other European countries, muslims are not the only ones who are subjected to discrimination, often East Europeans with almost similar colour and culture (not religion) as the British are singled out as well.
Rather than Islam, what people have to fear is the Wahabi version of Islam promoted by Saudi Arabia. The unease of Europeans is understandable; but moderate muslims in Asia (or in Europe) will be equally displeased with the Wahabi version of their faith. In an earlier era, the Catholic Church did the same things the Wahabis are doing now; in different parts of the world, including India.
Muslims or people who consider beginning a new life abroad, for example in Europe, should know they have to respect and follow the legal system of the country they live in. European Constitutions give women the same rights as men, therefore is it absolutely necessary that Muslims accept the Constitution of the country they live in. That means they must send their daughters to school, give them an education and stop treating them like second rate citizens. A peaceful life together will be problematic as long as the Constitution and the legal system of the country are not accepted. A certain assimilation must take place. If all that occurs, harmony and peace are no longer a dream between different cultures. I thank Hasan for this interesting and well written article.
Ironically the comments on the article do also show the same wave of islamophobia. I would like to congratulate the writer being so objective in his views.
Dear Fernandes,
Your misconception about Islam is wrong.
Saudia Arabia is a Muslim country ruled by Kings and not a democratic republic where everything is imposed. The same is not the case in Syria,Pakistan etc which is a democratic country and Christians follow the religion. Islam means basically submission to ONE god who is Omnipotent & Omnipresent without associating any partner to Him. Islam belive in Jesus Christ and his teachings and accept him as one of the messenger and not as god.
There is no single Aayah or verse in the Holy Quran which says Khafirs are to be killed.
Muslims are not imposing anything on Europeans but are requesting to allow them follow the religion for which there is opposition. If anybody changes himself he/she loses the identity & self respect and Muslims do not want to lose their identity.
Please explain me if there are no Gurudwaras or temples are there in switzerland and why the same is not being done with the Sikhs and Hindus there? I will explain. The growth of Islam in western nations as per their own statistics is an astonishing 240% in last 3 years which is the real cause of Alarm to the Church.
I welcome you to look into http://www.irf.net/ and you shall be cleared of your misconceptions.
Dear Sir, Yes I fully understand your fellings, but you have to see life both ways, Islam does not permit any religion to practise its teachings, look at Saudi Arabia a Christian can't even wear a cross. Please change your perception about other religions and stop saying Islam is the only religion, learn to live in harmony with other religions and except other religions. Islam is not the only religion. Stop your fanatical ways of saying non belivers are kafirs and should be killed. Why don't you condemn that. First look inwards and then speak as to why Europe wants you out. You can't go to somebody else's country and tell them what to do, just as I can't impose my way of life when I come to your country. Learn to obey laws of a foreign nation and if you don't like them go back. Change yourselves first.
Thanks Damian Fernandes
"..if anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him from the bottom of my heart, and point out to him that upon the banner of every religion will soon be written in spite of resistance: "Help and not fight," "Assimilation and not Destruction," "Harmony and Peace and not Dissension."
Swami Vivekananda's concluding address at the parliament of religions, chicago, Sept.27, 1893[!]
Any steps taken in the direction of alienating the community would have a disastrous effect . Terrorist needs these types of excuses to fan fundamentalistic passions. Every one should be free to practice their religion as long as there is no force applied and to the extent it does not infringes upon any ones fundamental rights.
why muslims talk about democracy when no muslim country is a democracy. here some imam talking about mosque. tell me one muslim place where anyone other muslim can pray without fear. first get your acts togethor, then you can comment on others.
nothing is anti-muslim consipracy. one famous saying "all muslims are not terrorist, but all terrorists are muslims".
they dont know how to live in a democratic society, they want everybody be muslim. thats where the problem is.
Has Hasan Suroor ever written a piece on how an non-Muslim dress or creed is disallowed in Saudi Arabia?
Tariq Ramadan is a polemicist. Hasan is just playing to the gallery by ignoring the record of Islamic oppression on non-Islamic lifestyles.
Segregation on the basis of sex is sign of backwardness. Muslims living in the west must learn to respect the sensibilities of the native population than the other way round.
Muslim Council of Britain's Inayat Banglawala was on record saying British to stop drinking as it offends Muslims. Enough of Hasan Suroors.
Muslims treat their women bad. That has to change. In Europe we do not accept women to be treated as second rated citizens. If we allow this it will spill over to other sect/society. If they want to live here they have to assimilate or live in their land. This author is blatantly wrong when he justifies this act by pointing at others. You do not practice it, simple.
Very Interesting article, Europeans should look at India and learn how to respect and treat ethnic minorities or people different from your own race. look at the increased attack on Indian students - its to do with the past colonial mind inbred in the political classes.
Islam is something to be feared of. Its better India wake up to this danger as soon as possible.
