After the Central Bureau of Investigation filed the charge sheet in the Ishrat Jahan case, a shocked Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the Congress of politicising the issue and alleged that the party is ready to compromise the nation’s security.
In much the same way that the BJP has defended the 2002 Gujarat riots, citing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, it has brought up the ‘CBI role’ in the disproportionate assets charges against Uttar Pradesh leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
The former BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has even chosen the Coalgate scam to deflect attention from the Ishrat case. He said in a statement: “Coming to the latest and serious case like the Coalgate scam, which is being monitored by the Supreme Court, the CBI Director, in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, has himself admitted that the Union Law Minister had called the CBI officials, gone through the report prepared by the CBI to be submitted to the Court, suggested changes.”
