Each bombing the Indian Mujahideen carries out is a medium for a political message enmeshed with India’s dystopic communal landscape: that democratic politics cannot defend India’s Muslims
“You who have ruled India for eight hundred years, you who lit the flame of the one true God in the darkness of polytheism: how can you remain in your slumber when the Muslims of the world are awakening?” the al-Qaeda ideologue Asim Umar asked India’s Muslims last summer. “If the youth of the Muslim world have joined the battlefields with the slogan ‘Shari’a or Martyrdom,’ and put their lives at stake to establish the Caliphate, how can you lag behind them? Why is there no storm in your ocean,” Mr. Umar demanded to know.
Last week’s arrests of key Indian Mujahideen operatives have led to speculation that India’s most feared terror group — responsible for savage serial bombings in major cities, including the 2006 attacks on Mumbai’s suburban train system — may be disintegrating. Tehseen Akhtar, its key recruiter, is now in prison; so is Muhammad Zarar Siddibapa, its operation chief.
For investigators though, these breakthroughs have brought forth disturbing new evidence that Mr. Umar, and other propagandists like him, are succeeding in calling a new army into being — an army born in Indian towns and cities scarred by communal warfare and hardened in the battlefields of Pakistan’s north-west.
The dusk that shrouds the Indian Mujahideen heralds, the evidence suggests, the coming of its second sunrise.
The new jihadisKarachi residents Muhammad Fahim and Muhammad Abdul Walid, held by the Uttar Pradesh police last week, told investigators that they had first been recruited by the Lashkar-e-Taiba, and then broke with it to make their way to a Taliban training camp in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand district. Then, they were led by the fugitive Pune jihadist, Mohin Chaudhury to the Indian Mujahideen’s Karachi-based chief, Riyaz Shahbandri. Faisalabad-based bombmaker Zia-ur-Rahman, Mr. Akhtar’s recently arrested deputy, served with Taliban groups in Pakistan’s Punjab before volunteering to serve with the Indian Mujahideen fighting across the border.
Meanwhile, new jihadist cells have sprung up within India. The recruits include young people, their minds fired by Internet Islamism, as well as veterans once linked to the proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Fugitive Ranchi resident Haider Ali, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) says, raised volunteers from both these groups for the bombing of the revered Buddhist shrine at Bodh Gaya last year, as an act of vengeance for communal violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority.
Mr. Ali’s cell, only loosely connected through him to the Indian Mujahideen, followed up that attack with an attempt to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a rally in Patna, surprising the organisation’s leadership in Karachi.
In Tamil Nadu, volunteers at a Chennai college even signed up to serve with jihadists in Syria — recruited by local Islamists, and financed by a Singapore-based executive.
Key commanders of the Indian Mujahideen, meanwhile, remain active in Karachi, most important of them being Riyaz Shahbandri, his brother Iqbal Shahbandri and Abdul Subhan Qureshi. There are a host of second-rung leaders still at large, like Mirza Shadab Beg, Shahnawaz Alam, Muhammad “Bada” Sajid, Alamzeb Afridi, Zulfikar Fayyaz “Kagazi,” Rahil Sheikh and Ariz Khan. The man who financed them all, ganglord Amir Raza Khan, is also at large.
The western stormFrom Internet chats between Mr. Shahbandri and Mr. Siddibapa, recovered by the NIA, we know that several of those men have sought combat training with jihadists in Pakistan’s north-west, and in Afghanistan, developing skills the Indian Mujahideen’s cadre never had.
It has long been evident that the gathering storm of violent Islamism in Pakistan would lash India, too. In 2010, al-Qaeda released a posthumous audio message from Egyptian jihadi Said al-Masri, claiming responsibility for the bombing of the German Bakery in Pune. “The person who carried out this operation was a heroic soldier from the Soldiers of the Sacrifice Brigade, which is one of the brigades of Qaedat al-Jihad [the al-Qaeda’s formal name] in Kashmir, under the command of Commander Illyas Kashmiri, may Allah preserve him.”
Mr. al-Masri’s message was wrong on several details of the operation, but for investigators, news that elements of al-Qaeda had developed links with jihadi groups acting against India did not surprise anyone.
David Headley, the Pakistani-American Lashkar operative now serving a life term for his role in the 26/11 attacks, had told the NIA of an anti-India “Karachi project” linked to global jihadi groups.
Driven by communal eventsFollowing Pakistani military ruler General Pervez Musharraf’s 2007 siege of jihadists holed up inside Islamabad’s Lal Masjid, Mr. Headley told the NIA, that an ideological war broke out among Pakistan’s jihadis. In spite of efforts by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, he said, the “aggression and commitment shown to jihad by the several splinter groups influenced many committed fighters to leave Kashmir-centric outfits and join the Taliban.”
In turn, al-Qaeda became increasingly interested in India, as a means of competing for influence and legitimacy with traditional jihadi groups like the Lashkar, which were supportive of the Pakistani state. In the wake of 26/11, al-Masri himself released a statement warning India of attacks if it struck against Pakistan.
The renewal of a jihadist constituency within India shouldn’t be a surprise: the rise of Mr. Modi, and the Hindu nationalist tendencies he represents, has unleashed existential anxieties among large numbers of Indian Muslims. Though the numbers of jihadi recruits are minuscule, the members of the new cells are also true to a familiar pattern. The earliest Indian jihadist formation, the Tanzim Islahul Muslimeen, was formed to protect Muslims against communal violence, and carried out its first strike, the 1993 bombings of inter-city express trains, to avenge the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
In interrogations, Indian jihad volunteers have repeatedly said they acted to avenge the Gujarat carnage of 2002. Feroze Ghaswala told police he had volunteered to join jihad training after witnessing the mass burial of 40 Gujarat riot victims. Peedical Abdul Shibly and Yahya Kamakutty, both successful computer professionals, are alleged to have prepared to carry out attacks in Bangalore. Men from Kerala trained in the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir with the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Zabiuddin Ansari, from Maharashtra, famously ended up in the 26/11 control room.
Founded in April 1977, SIMI, the fountainhead of the modern Indian jihadist movement, was itself driven by the forces of communal violence. From the outset, scholar Yoginder Sikand has said “that Islam alone was the solution to the problems of not just the Muslims of India, but of all Indians and, indeed, of the whole world.” It drew thousands disillusioned with traditional politics, Dr. Sikand has recorded, providing supporters “a sense of power and agency which they were denied in their actual lives.”
From December 1992, following the demolition of the Babri Masjid, SIMI’s language became increasingly aggressive. In a statement in 1996, it declared that since democracy and secularism had failed to protect Muslims, the sole option was to struggle for the caliphate. Soon after, it put up posters calling on Muslims to follow the path of Mahmood Ghaznavi, the 11th century warlord. In 2001, after the 9/11 attacks, SIMI activists organised demonstrations hailing Osama bin-Laden as a “true mujahid.”
Early in the summer of 2004, a group of young men fed up with SIMI’s inability to act on its own talk gathered in the small coastal town of Bhatkal in Mangalore — and founded what we now call the Indian Mujahideen.
The jihadi traditionTo understand the durability of the jihad within India, it is important to remember that its cadre are inheritors of a long political tradition. In a manifesto sent to the media after their September 2008 bombings in New Delhi, the group said the attacks were carried out “in the memory of two most eminent Mujahids of India: Sayyed Ahmed Shaheed and Shah Ismail Shaheed (may Allah bestow His Mercy upon them) who had raised the glorious banner of Jihad against the disbelievers.” The historian Ayesha Jalal has shown that the notion of jihad was an important theme in both pre-colonial and colonial India. Syed Ahmad and Shah Ismail were killed battling Sikh troops in a failed jihad involving the tribes of Pakistan’s north-west.
Historian Stephen Dale has observed that these ideas stretched to the south of India, noting the work of the Sixteenth Century author, Zayn al-Din al-Ma’bari, who chronicled the jihad against Portugal’s intrusions into the Indian Ocean, hoping to “inspire the Faithful to undertake a jihad against the worshippers of the cross.”
Each bombing the Indian Mujahideen carries out is a medium for a political message enmeshed with India’s dystopic communal landscape: that democratic politics cannot defend India’s Muslims. India’s intelligence and police services deserve credit for the long war they have fought, but it is time for politicians to act to heal our fractured nation.

I do not know of any article by this author which expresses the slightest doubt on what the "Sources Say"...
And Grand headings like "Second sunrise of Indian jihad" does not substance, even as it multiplies its effect.
The only way is to develop and sustain nationalism leave away all the
isms behind and look at the nation as the top priority item. whatever
measures to appease one or the other groups will only widen the gap
further.
author has a point....when u look at today's islam,it has become
combative and not accomodative.there are very many examples such
OWAISI brothers, badruddin ajmal of AIUDF,so called "tallest" muslim
leader of kerala MADHANI whom mr.karunanidhi shamelessly solicited for
muslim votes...and above all ZAKIR NAIK...these people under veneer of
secularism, spew communal hatred among muslim populace&promote
oneupmanship that is dangerous for the very fabric of indian
nationalist narrative, with tacit support of so called
SICKularists{congress,DMK,SP,BSP....}.for all those Hindu Right
Baiters, the point to be driven home is "if hindu majoritarianism was
embraced by hindus a long way back, india might have been very
different by now...but hindus are empowered by
secularism&pluralism&freedom of expression which muslim theocracy
states never share eg.SAUDI ARABIA BANNING ATHEISTS and harrowing life
of TASLIMA NASREEN.understanding muslims would never be complete
without accepting this DUALITY
I fully endorse the views expressed by Mr. Arun Sharma.
However, though terrorism is no doubt an international scourge, the home grown Indian Variety of terrorism as Practiced by IM definitely had its Genesis in the Post Godhra, Gujarat Anti âMuslim State Sponsored Pogrom& so Mr. Praveen Swamiâs passing &fleeting mention of this Obvious Causal Connection between the two cannot be faulted with.
But, as many others have also observed, this kind of a Perverse Revenge that does not discriminate between actual perpetrators & innocents & goes Blindly ahead to satisfy once hate through mass murders can never be justified whatever might have been the Provocation. Therefore it is incumbent up on both Majority & Minority to go beyond Blame Games & work for True & Lasting reconciliation as neither can WISH AWAY the OTHER.
So let us ALL work towards a Nation State& more IMPORTANTLY a Society that Cares for all,so that RUPTURES between Communities become& remains History!
Dear Author,
All of us have freedom of expression but it seems not prudent to use it
for demeaning a community though in the name of freedom of press. Some
partial truths are better not to be told, if it doesn't serve for
general good and if it is told, it mustn't be one-sided. I have been
reading almost all of your columns in The Hindu, especially when there
was so much hue of extremism. I feel that you are consciously tries in
the article to create the 'dystopia' in the minds of the good majority
about Muslims as if you have some grudge against/experience from them.
The minutely detailed stories appear that you have all the first hand
threads of all that stories at your finger tips. However, I wonder how
is it possible for having such details for even an astute journalist or
even for the field expert considering the subject nature? Either such
stories might have come from the originator or an agent/propagandist of
the originator for some hidden social engineering purpose. No one can
deny such a possibility in an age of paid journalism, and liaising of
corporates with power hungry selfish politicians to grab wealth of the
state. Also, I doubt time-frame of this article
There are clear aberrations in all society and religious groups all
over the world and it is a little bit strange in Indian stage because
of its diversity. The accused might have used the undesirable recent
Indian social environment to exaggerate, exploit and justify for their
heinous criminal acts but I couldn't agree for giving a generalizing
perception as your sincerity is not shown to reveal the other side of
the coin.
Indian Muslims basically, as I understand, is a disorganized and
socially, economically and educationally backward lot, live in fear
with existential crisis in ghettoes, absorbed some of the
characteristics of cast-reigned Indian society, not so affluent and
caring for their daily bread. Their cream youths are not interested in
the so-called jihad but trying to find dignified job and nothing to do
with thousand year-old histories of imperial age. Muslim community is
either need to be silent on any issues, they are asked to prove their
commitment explicitly to the nation though they are borne and brought
up in its soil. What I think is that Indian Muslims just want only
their legal rights as all others which in turn are clearly defined in
the constitution, though the new advocates of extra-nationalism
reluctant to accept it. No religion teaches to kill others, killing and
damaging innocents can't be justified on any ground in a civilized
society. The author is fanning hatred of the majority towards the
minority in a zigzag way by tactically building a perception which
lacks simply emotional intelligence. Misinterpretation of constitution
was ideologically made by Parivars in India, BJP is its political arm
and the years they managed in power utilized to maximum extend. Thanks
sensible good people of India, it is going to fade to some extent now
due to emergence several political equations.
So, readers can appreciate for an all-inclusive India and it is actual
strategy that the majority readers like to see in The Hindu.
@Shakil: really nice comment, and to add, more than anyone else it is in muslim community's hands that lies the responsibility and opportunity to curb terrorism and other problems related to muslims. Muslims leaders should concentrate on educating their sect people in joining education instituations, controlling population and being vigilant about suspicious people around their locality(as most of the terrorists are from muslim majority areas).
An article without a good solution is not meaningful for me .Its very
good to analyse but cant see the truth .
We all are seeing growth of terrorism in front of our eye and we are
not ready to accept it .
Lack of basic education makes it worse .Though we accept it that
Muslims literacy is poorer than ST , and we cant have a good step to
solve it.
The problem in Muzaffarnagar lead for the worst future of the refugees
in the slums . Hope, we (our Government) could have realised it .Now
what do you think, what is going on in the minds of those poor children
.Now they will go through the extremist phase (and we are the
originator) .So, we must have some good steps to stop these things at
root level .
I hope for better and peaceful India, and please join for good cause
,Insha Allah (Amen) .
It will be good, if media don't fuel this rift between religions. Sometime, it is good not to touch the wound and it heals its own. But the way media is digging often (yes, election is nearing), i clearly see some section want to keep flame of hatred alive. But, we understand who is doing this and why. The votes are already secured with deep thought.
fundamentalism or terrorism is not only for Islam its is for all
religion of people who take extreme form.if it is Indian mujaheddin, let
to Islamic extremist then there is VHP,Bajrang dal,Ram sena, shiv
sena,RSS to Hindutva terror we the common people who has to be careful
of these viruses which divide people in the name of religion and taste
the power
The politics of religion and caste is tearing apart the country. The
media is as much responsible as the politicians for this state of
affairs.
The first paragraph of article says all about the ideology which
these propagandist take to misguide youth .
1. "You who lit the flame of one true god in the darkness of
polytheism " , it shows that they want Islam to be an exclusionary
and rigid religion , this create problem as other religions doctrine
are not respected but even discarded.
2 . "How can you remain in slumber when Muslim of world are awakening
", they want to project a trans national religious identity , and
want to link youth in a "global jihad" war.
The solution to above can only come from within the community in
India itself . First , they have to accept that their can be
different ways to reach God and every one is allowed to practice it's
own beliefs. It will not only help to resolve the debate of
monotheism / polytheism , but in longer run helps to develop a multi
cultural dialogue . Secondly , accepting the same ancestry and Indian
identity , which will delink from global jihad and islamization of
world.
@syed First of all you have proved yourself how much ignorant you are. LTTE was group of tamils and tamils include hindus, christians and muslims. LTTE's identity was on linguistic and regional basis, it had nothing to do with hindu religion. And by the way most of south indians have been made to be believed in a myth of aryan-dravidian divide, as a result of which almost all parties in south are based on their dravidian identiy and have never associated themselves with any particular religion. Now maoists and naxalites follow the marxist-leninist ideology of which i am sure you have no idea about, doesnot believe in any religion. And speaking of Bodos, it is again a regional movement and has nothing to with religion. So you have got it all wrong. But when it comes to terrorist outfits such as al-qeauda,IM,laskar etc, there no body can argue whether their ideology is based on islam or not, because clearly it is. So pls come out of this denial mode and start accepting things.
We as Indians know that we are living in a very fragile, delicate,
divided and yet progressive country.
What happened 500/1000 years ago is a thing of the past now?
What Gazni could do was because local rulers were weak?
And as far as treatment of muslims in India is concerned, just
remember the plight of sikhs when terrorism in Punjab was at its peak.
All these things happen because religious figures become the leaders
of the society and tend to guide the people. This is what happened
with Sikhs, Muslims and now happening with Hindus also.
SO I request the elite and erudite groups from Muslim world, please
raise your voice against the wrong, whether the wrong is from inside
or outside.
Similar to Dayanand Saraswati who dared to fight against superstions
among Hindus and made his point well understood. His voice is still
heard in the vibrations of Arya Samaj.
Similaly Sir Sayyed Ahmad Khan did for Muslim world but we need more
activities.
I used to read Praveen Swami's articles earlier and believe it too.
After I came to know that the entire Ishrat Jahan "encounter" killing as reported by Swami was verbatim reproduction of the police and security agencies, after I read in news that it was a fake encounter and the culprits are facing serious charges of murder, now I do not even bother to read them.
First principle a reporter should follow is to be circumspect towards police as well as those who oppose it. If objectivity is sacrificed for ease or bias, a reporter stops being one and becomes a transcriber.
The so called jihadists are product of RSS and Congress.RSS wanted Hindu Muslim riots to capture power and Congress wanted the same riots to happen that will force these Muslims to come to them with votes. This charade was going for several decades till Muslims found an alternative to go to which is the regional party like SP,DMK etc.,When the police, intelligence, bureaucracy, media and sometimes judiciary are against any community, there are only two options.Suffer in silence or take revenge by taking up arms. All over the world we see this happening.
Nobody cares about minorities where they are considered as an irritants and anti nationals.Their true grievance is ignored and are treated as pesky.Media infested with RSS elements ensured this. The truth is Muslims have nowhere to go that is forcing them to take arms and violence.
Islam is religion of peace unless you accept it. But still all islamic
countries people fight among themselves, these countries are most terror
ridden including hub of terrorism pakistan. No country can survive if
they DO NOT control muslims and their activities..lesson learnt and
advocated by US, UK and Australia when will India rise above the vote
bank politics and teach to such islamic goons. We are still not able to
address why well-placed, educated muslim youth joined terrorism ??? and
why 99% terrorists across world are muslims.
Dr. Pattabhi Sitarammaiya in his History of India describes the circumstances under which the Kashi Vishwanth temple had to be razed to the ground. He states that when Aurangzebâs entourage was on way from Delhi to Kolkata the Hindu queens requested for the overnight stay in Kashi to enable them to have the Darshan of Lord Vishwananth. Next morning one of the queens who had gone to have the holy prayer did not return and was found in the basement of the temple, dishonored and raped by the Mahant of the temple. The Mahant was punished and the temple was razed to the ground as it had become polluted due to this ghastly act. Aurangzeb gave land and state support to build another temple.
It should be noted that Hindu Kings were not far behind in attacking and damaging temples when it became a political necessity for their rule or for the lust of wealth. Retreating Maratha armies destroyed the temple of Srirangtatanm, to humiliate Tipu Sultan whom they could not defeat in the battle.
Generally it is assumed that Muslim kings destroyed Hindu temples to spite the Hindus. Todayâs âsocial common senseâ believes that not only Somnath temple but also Ram Janm bhumi temple, Kashi Vishwanth temple, the Mathura Krishna Janmasthan and thousands of other temples have been destroyed by the Mughal aggressors. The general and sweeping statement apart let us have a look at some of these demolitions. Mahmud Gazni on way to Somanth encountered the Muslim ruler of Multan (Abdul Fat Dawod), with whom he had to have a battle to cross Multan. In the battle the Jama Masjid of Multan was badly damaged. Further on way he struck compromise with Anandpal, the ruler of Thaneshwar who escorted his army towards Somanth with due hospitality. Gazniâs army had a good number of Hindu soldiers and five out of his 12 generals were Hindus (Tilak, Rai Hind, Sondhi, Hazran etc). Before proceeding to damage the temple he took custody of the gold and jewels, which were part of the temple treasury. After the battle he issued coins in his name with inscriptions in Sanskrit and appointed a Hindu Raja as his representative in Somnath.
It is most unfortunate that everyone speaks about 2002 Gujarat Riots. However, no one speaks about the trigger of those riots, setting an entire Railway coach on fire which killed nearly 70 innocent people.
@Akshay. Here we go! What a passion you guys have, when it comes to post your vitriol against Muslims! While so much focus is on the rise of IM in our country, why the media and readers alike go mute, when it comes of to comments on the atrocities and terrorism done by Maoists, Bodoland activists, Gurkha land, LTTE etc..? Is it being they are Hindus then? The harsh reality in today's India is, majority Hindu population mindset and firm opinion is that, no matter whatever crime and terrorism a Hindu does, they are immune.
Terrorism exists in all faiths, be it Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Christanity. They have their own reasons for such acts. When a sikh terrorist Bhullar's heinous crime can be commuted to life sentence, whats the justice we have in India? Same goes to Rajiv Gandhi killers. Terrorism and the perpetrators in India are handled and convicted on the basis of their faith. This leads to further frustration among the minorities and lose of faith in our justice.
Muslims in India are treated worse than untouchables, if seen the kind of apathy majority shows to them. Constitution of our country guarantees equality, freedom of speech and rights to every Indian citizen, regardless of their race and religion. Many of the readers, who blindly post their venom against Muslims are not aware about this basic information. This country is secular and for that matter, the kind of Hinduisation enveloped all over the country is totally akin to talibanisation.
Hindu brethren should not preach the other communities, when your own faith has misusing all the priviliges. What is the need to have your deities pics in government offices, schools, courts, police stations, when our country is secular? Stop comparing Muslim countries with India. Why Hindus support LTTE and go to the extend of asking a separate nation, why Hindus become leaders of other countries? Why Hindus keep quiet when sikh terrorists are martyrs in Punjab and the government there honours them by having memorials. Hypocrisy is at its height for guys.
Muslims have always been a disaffected lot in India ever since their one God began his battle against the many Gods of Hinduism. The battle seemed to have culminated in the demand for Partition and the subsequent break up of the country.
Partition was a good thing because otherwise, seeing the unrest in Pakistan, India would have been completely destroyed by now. After all it was the Muslims in what is now India that were the most passionate about Pakistan.
Yet, after Partition happened they did not go there. The only solution is that Partition be completed by facilitating the resettlement of Muslims in today's India in Pakistan and in Bangladesh.
Muslims owe it to a secular India to keep their word and leave so that they can find their happiness in the two Muslim countries. India for its part must take in all non-Muslims from the two countries.
A secular India cannot be trading partner with the two Muslim countries and all South Asians will prosper.
@Kannan Allah is a word for GOD, BHAGWAN, Paramshaktiman, pramatma, Ajanama as used in Rig vedas with powers of (Creater, Destroyer and Sustainer), as one without any progeny or reincarnation.
Laa ilaaha illalaah, Mohamed ar-Rasool Allah
(Translation: âThere is absolutely no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Mohammad (saws) is the Messenger of Allah.â)
In Islam, what we must determine at all times, if we indeed wish to be guided aright, is what is the command of Allah Subhanah, and what did the Prophet (saws) do to fulfill this command. In Islam, the condition to the Right Path is to follow whatever is the command of Allah and His Messenger (saws).
The âkalimaâ or testification that the Messenger of Allah (saws), invited all mankind to was Laa ilaaha illalaah, Mohamed ar-Rasool Allah âI bear witness that there is no god, but Allah; and I bear witness that Mohamed is the Messenger of Allahâ.
If a individual strive for anything to acheive, like corruption free India, Checking rabid commmunalism and fanaticism, eradicating the evils of caste system and to bring economic prosperity in India. He/She is doing Jihad against corruption, communalism, caste system or poverty respectively. Violent means to strike against evils is last prescribed method and detested one. Its shameless that fanatics among muslims and hindus are using intelligence agencies to create hatred among communities with history of composite culture of last 900 years. The cooperation and communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims exists from last 900 years. Inspite of minor skirmishes due to some fanaticist forces.
Author seems to be on of the jihad recruit and thehindu his advocate.
The problem with muslims is muslims. Wherever in the world muslims go,
soon trouble follows. A clue to the genesis of this problem lie in the
very beginning of their prayer call: La illaha illa Allah ...there is
no god but Allah.
What i want to know is who has given these muslims the right to say
only Allah is god. My god is my business ,why is he poking his nose
into my personel views?.If the prayer says ALLah is god, nobody has
any problem but when it says there is no other god but ALLAH, IS HE
NOT PROVOKING? WHO GAVE THEM THAT RIGHT? ...so soon trouble starts in
the society after the arrival of these mulsims.
" that democratic politics cannot defend Indiaâs Muslims" !
What a amazing statement? It is other way around. Two days ago in Pakistan a Hindu temple was burnt and Hindus did not retaliate for that.(Hindu did not even publish that). Muslims in India burn cities if some thing happen in some other country. The author projects a view in this article that Muslims are killed in millions every day in India! What is the opinion of this author on Article 370! How come Muslim Krushid is a minister and there is 300 million Muslims live in India. This author should give his explanation first about democratic processes in India. Look at Pakistan. Does this author wants old South African style rule in India?
There is a complete contradiction in Praveen Swami's thinking. On the one hand he says Jihad has a long tradition in India to defend and expand the faith. One other hand he potrays it as some sort of last resort of a vulnerable minority. The reality is something else. There is a reason why no such entity as IM existed decades ago when communal riots were as common as now. The Muslims in India are now exposed to the aggressively violent strain of Islam that is taking hold around the world. Constantly potraying themselves as the victim while outfits like IM do their duty to the faith is part of the grand plan to expand the faith. The liberal jholawala JNU secularists refuse to accept this fact, as it makes them uncomfortable.
How come none of the Muslim readers have commented on this,as they would
comment anything on Advani or Modi or BJP !
So the IM members are increasing because of BJP...then pray ,why
terrorism is rocking regularly even in Pakistan ?Is it again because of
India's BJP? Earlier I used to like Praveen Swami's articles.Of late
they are becoming routine and as some reader commented the author is
'biased' .Sometimes I wonder whether it is a must for journalists to be
biased in their hurry to be a 'secularist'.
Literal meaning of Jihad is to "Strive " Therefore, it can be fit to improve the society by passsive means to eradicate corruption, communalism ansd rabid caste system. The people are interpreting in violent way to demonise muslims of India.
Your esteemed newspaper used to publish fictional stories on jihadi terrroism in India. The bomb blast in India like Malegoan, Ajmer, hyderabad, samjhauta express blast by same author. The innocent muslim youths were caught in the name of Indian Mujahideen their life incarcerated with tag of jihadis and their career as professionals tarnished and family shaterred. The myth of terror and terrroising of IndiAN MUSLIMis having negative reactions. The intelligence agencies are speculating and drawing conjectures on the basis of Al Qaeda ideolgue statements and framing inncent youths to create fear psychosis among minorities.Indian muslims are different from their Arabs counterpart they have the Indian culture and dentity in their Islam. Their basic ideology is of "WAHDAT AL WAJUD " proposed by IBN ARABI propagated by both Deobandi and Barelvi sect of Islam in India. They have their own sets of school of thoughts.
Secular and Communal, these words have no meaning today in India. They
sound more like four letter words. In the world of a common citizen
belonging to any religion jihadists or senas are fast becoming their
heroes. They are the people who mostly have half baked knowledge, for
example I have often heard such people describing late Mrs. Indira
Gandhi's husband Feroze Gandhi a Muslim, he was a Parsi gentleman.
Another example, I read a comment by a reader in some newspaper
describing Maoists as Hindus in his answer to the allegation that
Muslim fundamentalists are responsible for killing many people.
This article will not help in any way the Nation, except inciting
the gullibles to their goals. Everybody knows, in India people are
peace-loving and they have very little time to think of religion.
No doubt, they believe in God but not fanatics to believe that
there is only one God and that is so and so. Indian philosophy
teaches that there is only one God, you may call Him by any name,
and He responds. In fact every man is Godly every creature on
earth is Godly. That's why in India Hinduism is surviving for
thousands of years. Indians are all believers only. The author of
this article may try to unite all the people, irrespective of
religion by writing his articles in that way.
It is the greatness of Indian culture that people from all religions are staying in India, but few fanatics are out to spoil and disrespect the hospitality of Indian people and culture. Such people must be ruthlessly crushed and send to the countries where they were originally destined, but due to the circumstances stayed back in India. These countries, a manufacturing hub for terrorists can be most ideal place for them and their followers because these countries resides their own type of fanatics and terrorists. The cleaning process must start with the most horrible creatures SIMI and Indian Mujahedin.
According to the author: "Founded in April 1977, SIMI, the fountainhead
of the modern Indian jihadist movement, was itself driven by the forces
of communal violence." This was before Modi, Godhra, Babri etc. etc. As
usual, the author starts with the biosketch of the latest jihadis
captured and then cleverly transfers the blame on the "communal forces".
I think the writer has failed to understood the gist of islamic
terrorism. All the terrorist are fanatics and bigots who want of convert
a infidel land(darul-ul-herb) to darul-ul-islam and they are mostly
driven by this idealogy.
If we apply your explanation for rise of terrorism then Israel is right
with all she is doing for it's protection.
We have to wake up because we do not know our history let alone our faith. We are
not a polytheistic faith (well Sanatana Dharma isn't), but I will leave people to
discover this for themselves. What right do Muslims or anyone to that matter have
to force their faith on others and justify that based on their faith? We have seen the
faiths of Abraham (the Jewish, Christian and Islamic) are aggressive, forceful and
are crusading. We have a different set of values to them and why should we accept
their assault on us and why do we have to be accepting of them when they are not?
We have no choice but to stand up to them and to fight for our faith and values.
These people are nothing but terrorists.
Dear SWami,
Please don't try to spread hate among communities giving communal colors to the activities of terrorists. If innocent persons are killed by criminals, all such criminals should be called as terrorists. Sri. Swamy should make out first the meaning of Jihad. The meaning of Jihad is struggle to make the society better. If a naughty person use a good word to project his evil act we never give the real meaning of that word to his evil act. Likewise we don't support the fundamentalists.
If Hindus organize, it is communal and divisive. If everyone else do the same is seen as
secular and most acceptable. This is the moral bigotry that had kept the the naive majority
batting on their backfoot and out of power in their own nation. Take a moment and think if all
Hindus vote only for Hindu candidates, howmany of the other religious groups will have their
representatives in the parliament? Probably none and probably a few that one can count on
the fingers. It is the liberal and thoughtful Hindu votes, without any doubt, that gave life to
parliamentarians of other communities. The Government in office had cleverly manipulated
the Hindu mass all this time to get their way so far, but the the sleeping giant is waking up to
realize his position and power in the nation to the dismay of those who had reaped the
benefit of power and position at cost of the majority. Do you want to call it communal, so be
it!
People who were brahmins and other forward caste in India, are also subjected to oppression by the government and all political parties and were left over for the past 60 years. They don't have reservation and in fact not given seats and employment even if they do well. But they have never resorted to violence or any other defending techniques as suggested by the author.
Historian Stephen Dale has observed that these ideas stretched to the
south of India, noting the work of the Sixteenth Century author, Zayn
al-Din al-Maâbari, who chronicled the jihad against Portugalâs
intrusions into the Indian Ocean, hoping to âinspire the Faithful to
undertake a jihad against the worshippers of the cross.â
However Zayn Al Din Al Maabari was inspiration for freedom struggles.
He was never work against political systems, but attempted to have
battle against the Portuguese colony, who intrude to India
I would like to add to my previous comment -- infact it will become easy
for the sponsors of Islamist extremism to succeed when the majority
community expresses bias in so many ways(subtle and rude) against
Muslims.
A well written article. Like the story of the 'Wolf and the Lamb' the
perpetrators of terrorism need a reason to justify act of violence
before the gullible. So in India, first it was babri masjid, then post
-2002, it became the Gujarat riots. Internationally, 9/11 happened
because of American 'atrocities ' on muslims worldwide. Terror strikes
in other nations happened because these nations are allies of the US.
By this logic religious minorities in countries like Pakistan and
Bangladesh should have become terrorists very long ago. So is the
case with other persecuted religious minorities through out the world.
It is not hard to see that the fundamental cause of religious
intolerance sprouts essentially from religious scritures themselves.
The root cause thefore is the premise that - Only I am good, all
others are bad. Promises of eternal life with sensual presures is
enough to drive brainwashed masses to done suicide vests.Only a major
reform/introspection can redeem the situation.
The only way to fight extremists is by Credibility, Credibility that
comes from impartiality and by absence of any type of biases and
prejudices. Unfortunately, the people who are staking their claim for
power have neither that type of credibility or tact and insight to win
against extremists. People must strive for communal unity under all
circumstances instead of spreading hatred -- that will give our security
forces the best chance to fight against sponsors of extremism.
Dear Author,
We fed'p reading these jihad related articles. Please don't glorify
these killers (Shah Ismail Shaheed) with stmts like "may Allah bestow
His Mercy upon them". What is his ideology and objective? killing
people who don't comply with his believes? I'd rather see him as
patient with psychological disorder than martyr. Normally a person
doesn't chooses his religion, he acquires it from his/her
Parents/Guardians. As they grow up some develop strong attachment to
their faith (similar to patriotism to country). So what is the wrong
victims of shah ismail did? just being born to so called disbelievers?
what kind of book or god will say his acts as holy.
Moreover i feel our media is giving more hype to terrorism, by
following western media. We have much more important issues to
address. Even in the most terror prone state like J&K casualties due
to terror attacks are less than Road accidents. In my opine, giving
attention to these will educate the people than petrifying them.
For a dispassionate observer it could be easily seen that ,for the rise of jihadists, the
contribution from the mainstream journalists are indeed invaluable. In their effort to
contain BJP, they created persecution complex among Muslims, which, the jihadists
made use of aplenty. Their willfull exaggeration of incidents, destroyed their
credibility, and helped Modi immensely. That Kerala, where Muslims physically, financially, and above all politically dominate the scene, contribute maximum to the jihadi efforts, tells the hollowness of the imaginary grievances fished out day in and day out, ostensibly to create secular images. I have not seen a single secular gentleman telling their Muslim brothers that they are far better of on this part of the world , and their neighbours face problems in equal measures, if not more.
Can we please stop this anti-Modi rhetoric that the Hindu seems to be having nowadays of blaming everything on Modi. Modi is not the cause of rise of Islamic terrorism in India, it existed long before he came into the picture. By just blaming one man for everything, we are just running away from the real problem, that there are extremists out there who want to brainwash people. Given that Muslims in India have long been economically weaker than other sections of the society, they have also been easy targets. With their situation improving, one can hope that the youth don't fall into the false propaganda of people like Umar. Stop blaming Modi for everything and look into the real causes for once. If communalism was the cause of terrorism, we would have had Sikhs also up in arms against the country.
Good analysis. But the sad part is that once a time we (all religions
including Islam, Christianity and Hinduism) were together. As a true
Indian, I can understand the feeling and the pain of our Islam
brotherhoods. But, moving in the life forward, one should think of
improving himself. In the land where Gandhiji lived and preached non-
violence, revenge in the same way of blood does not make any sense.
There are many examples in the history to prove it. Only the truth and
people lived legends are remembered for ever like Gandhi, Nelson
Mandela, etc. But unfortunately, our political parties keep reminding
those by the pains like Congress who are doing this now. They are not
doing anything good for the people, but atleast they can stop
provoking the innocent people by always keep telling about the same
which creates a insecure atmosphere.Congress has no words to say on
secularism as they are the one in the rule for last 60 years. I pray
to Allah that people to change their mind.
These jihadists have been actively condoned if not actually encouraged by the Congress party's vote bank politics. Our liberal "secular" press hasnt lagged behind either by not outrightly condemning terrorist acts by Muslims, instead looking for evidence pointing to so called Hindu terror modules.
It is not the rise of Mr. Modi or his Hindu nationalism but how the rest of the political parties are demonizing him. As soon as we see a uniting leader emerge in India, the Congress and its clones become even more divisive. If anything, it is these other parties that are creating false perceptions and indoctrinating the minorities against Mr Modi and his nationalism. Unfortunately, the minorities seem ever ready to take their bait.
The author of this article is no different. He defines Hindu nationalism in a very negative way and then very simplistically, blames all the problems of Muslims on that. The author appears no different from the divisive Congress politicians. Please stop your divisive articles ordained with thoughts of Congress politicians and with quotations from terrorists.
An insightful article. However, jihadist activity has been going on all
over the world. There are hundreds of european immigrant muslims from
Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Britain etc who are fighting jihad in
Syria etc. How can then one even say communal violence in India is a
factor in increased jihadi interest among Indian muslims? Even in
Philippines and Thailand there is islamist terrorism.
India's battle with terrorism has been so,long. Politics must stop
appeasing Muslims, What is happening in Pakistan, Is it not a Islamic
nation? Why it is still burning? Violence is not the solution,
Harmonious growth is possible only with the peace. Religion is just a
mask. Politics must go beyond religions for betterment of the society.
It is very regretful matter that our democratic country could not understand the feelings of minority. But the way few Muslim in the name of jihad choose the path that is absolutely wrong. You canât improve the notion of common people through the verse of war. It would be better if you learn the same through proper education so that they can understand the right path to gain their right. Blood for blood will not attain anything. Political parties of India should understand that through communal carnage you will slowly destroying your motherland and someone will take its advantage. If you are not able to bound the harmony of all religious into one, you surely will not get the help of those people in the time of want.
I don't think there is any permanent solution for this as in some of the cases those who were radicalized were educated people perhaps the only solution is economic well being and to slowly reduce the space for these kind of elements by employment. There are always a few rogue elements in each community. The only main problem here is India's geographical location which can't be changed so we will have to find some permanent solution for that.
DEMOCRATIC POLITICS CANNOT DEFEND INDIAN MUSLIMS. This is precisely the reason given by Jinnah for partition. Except for few countries, most of OIC countries have autocracy or sham democracy. It is difficult for islam and democracy to co exist because while democracy allows thinking to expand, islam thinking is within the boundaries of rules projected it their faith. Not alone in India ,even in western democracies too, the issue is same. While indian democracy permits Muslim personal law, no other democracy in the world even entertains this idea.
All this will further alienate the rapidly fracturing Indian society.
Most of citizens fail to understand or accept that people preaching
violence as means are few and are in truth not doing it for their
respective religion. Eventually, all muslims have to bear the brunt
coz the ring of doubt gets generalized.
And our present "so called leaders" (all parties are equal culprits),
instead of trying to bridge the widening gaps in society, are actually
doing reverse for VOTES and/or POWER. They are after all a reflection
of majority of society.
Indian society isn't matured yet and have forgotten what we used to
stand upon and what our culture's core values are.
We are stuck in a hate spiral without realizing.
Solution: Let's try not to judge anyone based on religion or caste or
anything. There is good and bad everywhere irrespective of religion,
caste, country, color or any discrimination one can think of. Unless
we come out of this hate spiral, our society and country can't move
forward
We need some staunch critics from inside the community which can point the shortcoming of Muslim society. In Pakistan few people are trying to make this change
