The primary objective of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s two-day National Council meeting held in Delhi was to confirm the appointment of Rajnath Singh as the new helmsman. But as expected, the event turned into a showcase for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who, in turn, received the blizzard of praise as if he already knew his destiny. It was to have been the incoming president’s special moment. And yet if Mr. Singh felt discomfited by having to defer to a Chief Minister, he betrayed nothing. Far from it, he smothered Mr. Modi with praise and insisted that he get a standing ovation for his hat-trick of Assembly election victories. The cheering delegates only too happily obliged, imparting a Congress-like feel to the enactment on stage. Indeed, no one watching the proceedings could have missed the disconnect between the BJP’s claimed abhorrence of the personality cult and the conscious brand-building of Mr. Modi. The Gujarat Chief Minister expectedly played to the gallery with one-liners aimed at the Congress and its First Family, such as that Sitaram Kesri was a “night watchman” for Sonia Gandhi and now Manmohan Singh was performing the same role for Rahul.
Mr. Modi’s running theme was that India needed positivity and self-confidence which only the BJP could provide. But, the celebration was not unmarred by hitches. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan made it clear that the Gujarat Chief Minister was not the only ‘vikas purush’ around by providing an account of his own superlative performance in a State left “impoverished” by years of Congress “misrule.” Under his stewardship, MP had posted an average GDP growth of 10.20 per cent and a growth in agriculture of 18.91 per cent: “No other State in the country has achieved this,” he said to the obvious embarrassment of Mr. Modi and the BJP president. The meet closed with veteran Lal Krishna Advani asking for a reality check, especially on corruption: “We forgot that the people judge the commitment of any political party to fight corruption not by its pronouncements but by its practice and, when the need arises, by its punitive actions.” Clearly, while attacking the Congress on corruption, the BJP had forgotten why Nitin Gadkari had to resign and why its Karnataka government is teetering on the brink. The all-out projection of Mr. Modi suggests the BJP is preparing for an eventuality where some of its partners might desert it. But while that will undoubtedly electrify the rank and file, the party would do well to remember that parliamentary elections are settled by the sum of smaller contests rather than by a single gladiatorial joust, no matter how strong its chosen hero may be.

MODI PROJECT
Sir,
It seems that the minions of Modi at the BJP meet in Delhi committed a Freudian mistake.Though Modi's political ambitions are too well known,it was not the right time and place to make a show of them. The hat -trick in Gujarat is a feather in Modi's cap but not that of the party. They have to put aside the in fighting, make efforts to take people of all sections into confidence and above all must author an imaginative manifesto. Then only the party can project Modi or someone as its prospective candidate for the prime minister post.Any premature efforts would be counter productive, encouraging activities like leg pulling, mud slinging, throwing spanner into the works of promising candidates. And all this will corrode not only the image of the party but even its prospects of putting up a tough fight if not winning in the 2014 elections.
However, fact remains that strong leader like Indira Gandhi did it not once but several times and was also thrown out by the same electorate. Youth which is about over 60% of the electorate adores a strong down-to-earth leadership which can deliver.
Modi's comment of Manmohan Singh as a night watchman is not in good
taste which only proves that Modi is yet another politician and not
matured enough to take the High position. Given the constraints of our
coalition politics, I think Manmohan has managed country reasonably
well. Vajpayee also faced the same problem when he was the PM of the
country earlier. No one can dispute Manmohan Singh's integrity and
honesty and Modi's comments looks more like a street politician than a
person winning three consecutive state election.
Gautam Adani backs out of Wharton India forum in support of Modi. This is called upholding the integrity and respect of your country before yourself. I remember in July last year, when NaMo went to Japan, Gurgaon was burning. Suzuki's plant was razed down by workers and 1 manager was killed. Had NaMo been a political opportunist,he would have lashed then and there on Hudda in the eyes of the watching world. But NaMo being an Indian first, defended Hooda and carried out his responsibility as an Indian first, keeping aside the political differences. I know Congis will be reveling that it's a setback to NaMo, but then, you can't expect anything else from Madam's sycophants. Don't worry, NaMo is creating ripples around the world. He will keep on doing that and make sure, he doesn't have to go anywhere, the world's best would come to him after 2014 Loksabha Election.
Nightwatchman comes with no reputation (from the masses and through backdoor - Rajya Sabha) to keep the wicket warm for the so-called talented batsman to come and score in the next day. Unfortunately, here as the next batsman is not ready, the nightwatchman got a longer run. We saw him declare that Rahul has all capability to be the PM when he has proved nothing. No wrong in calling him a nightwatchman, because he did nothing to stop the corruption right under his nose.
Instead of asking Modi about Nitin Gadkari, it would be better if the
editor asked the congress governments in Maharashtra and Delhi to
conduct a probe. Investigate Gadkari, gather evidence, convict him.
After all they are the ruling party right? Am I missing something here?
Simply put: What have these parties and people done for:
1. Community?
2. Society?
3. The Country?
Where do they stand on:
1. Education for ALL children?
2. Healthcare for the elderlY?
3. Clean water for drinking?
Do they know what others on the International stage think?
Is there any altruism?
What have they done to be proud of?
Every deed, every thought, every action will be accounted for
You are absolutely correct Sinan .. People are just having a an
entrapped view which the branding team of Mr.Modi is juxtaposing on
them.
This time every citizen should support BJP and Mr. Modi. Modiji did a wonderful job in past 10 years, thats why he came back in power again. But if you think about Rahul Gandhi then ask a question to your self. Mr. Rahul Gandhi and his family is the chief of congress party and they have good control on PM also.
If you check the parliyament meeting then you can find his attendance. He never ask a single question in Parliamet and congress leaders are saying that he is national leader.
BJP is the most confused party of the country, both, politically and organizationally, they gathered there to put stamp on the president ship of Rajnath Singh and came out with "Modiraga". Rajnath Singh has also committed the blunder by putting corruption equal to God Ram, Krishna and Obama. So, corruption is the new God of BJP. than, why to curse Congress..
I really don't understand calling Manmohan Singh a night watchman as he has been the PM for almost two terms now.. Nightwatchman comes when some crisis occurs and somebody is installed.. Modi does not even know what he is saying.. Gujarat development, if you have visited, is just for some select BJP industrialists...Others are suffering...
why its Karnataka government is teetering on the brink?
Could be looked at in different perspective? Yedyurappa is an able
leader, and dedicated 30 years of his life to bring BJP from nothin to
govern the state of Karnataka. He had no corruption on his head till
he became the CM. 30 years of structure built is thrown to shatters
due to corruption. I ask which party in India can sacrifice the leader
like Yedyurappa because he was involved in corruption? Will Congress
do that? Thumbs Up to BJP since corrupt leaders can't survive in it,
like done in Congress. We have seen so many corrupt leaders in
Congress. Does anyone has the fate like Yedyurappa. Instead corrupt
leaders from state are moved to the center as their retirement
benefit. Congress is in leadership crisis. It can survive only if the
family stands with the party. If family was not in politics, then the
leaders in Congress would have been fighting like enemies for top
position.
Every party tries to project someone as the leader to fight the elections. BJP, which follows the same set of policies of the Congress party with a clear agenda of hindutvising the society or creation of Ram Rajya, has been projecting Modi as its candidate. Apart from this projection, why there is no talk of policies and how BJP's policies are different from that of the Congress party? Media when going behind Modi and Rahul purposefully ignores its duty to inspect both these parties style of functioning, policies followed and governance. When it comes to governance, health, education, house, food, communalism; both these parties are made for each other competing with each other. Need of the hour is a real alternative set of policies, wherein people comes before profit, and growth would mean the betterment of Indian citizen and not the growth of Adani's pocket. The facilitators of the corporate loot need to be replaced for a better future.
Thanks for providing us great insights. By the way, where is this rule
that "parliamentary elections are settled by the sum of smaller contests
rather than by a single gladiatorial joust, no matter how strong its
chosen hero may be"? Editor's fantasy? Want to wait and watch? Easy to
guess the title of your editorial in 2014 - "Modi & BJP won but India
lost" and your concluding comments will be - "It'll be good if Modi
realizes that winning parliamentary elections once doesn't mean that you
can do it again".
The term 'nightwatchman' would suit a dispensable one who stays for a brief while to make way for the regular. For Modi to describe Manmohan Singh in such terms is not in good taste as Dr.MMS has been PM for two consecutive terms enjoying the backing of majority of MPs.As one aspiring to become PM,Modi should be mindful of the weight of the words he employs against his opponents.Even if there is no topic to talk on,cheap abrasive jibes are not justified much much less when there are plenty of topics which really matter to the voters.Modi would do well to concentrate on such matters without resorting to personal portrayals as Watchman and the like.
Is this editorial the beginning of an anti-Modi project by the Hindu? One hopes that it
is not. This hope is because of the fact that unlike other main line media, this paper
had always adopted a non-partisan stance.
It is very good that the topic of discussion at the national level has now shifter over to corruption and development rather than pity caste politics in which our country has been engulfed.
It is in part due to the democratic nature of the country marked by the various protest in New Delhi, our capital. It truly shows the roots of democracy engulfed deep into the thoughts of its people, though the structure has been hijacked by a few, perhaps not competent enough.
While accusing the Congress party of promoting dynasty, the BJP has started promoting personality cult of Modi; it is worse than dynasty. That the senior most leader had a dissenting voice brings to light the unspoken division within the rank and file of the party. It is to be noted that personality cult make autocrats detrimental to democracy.
Party lone crusader is Modi and without him party become blank at national level when it comes to talk about growth and progress of pragmatic. But along with Modi Shivraj Singh Chauhan of MP as he presented fact of state GDP and agriculture growth should considered. He is heading the state of cover with more tribals and basically not known as filled with business class like Gujarath. Despite that brought part to bring it power twice consecutively takign on stalwart leader Umabharathi. If party central leadership strongly supported him in forthcomign election certainly he will also do the magic of third consecutive and becomes CM. Party should respect other CM who brought party to power either consecutive or gap.
Modi has grown and surviving in Gujarat with his masterly skill of inducing hatred, personal insult of anyone opposing his policies and playing to the gallery. In the process he has inspired millions to believe that hatred and insults are the only virtues in politics. Now he wants to emulate his success at the country level. The inspired millions are trying to put aside the better performing CMs like Chowhan, Nitish, Naveen, etc.
This editorial is commendable as it has clearly brought out in focus the building up of Modi as a person and not as a representative of the party. After all why did the party not focus on theachievements of their Governments in MP and Chattisgarh? And glossed over the corruption in Karnataka as well as in Uttaranchal and the loss in HP. Fortunately, Mr Advani has struck the right note by raising these issues .
SIr,
I grew up reading The Hindu everyday. It is part of my culture. But I find your views intriguing. Shri Modi will be good for the country that is obsessed with its economy and personal finances. Give him a chance and send a message to the country that we do not have to rely on dynasties to elect a leader.
Thanks
Dr.(Capt) V.Venkatesh
It seems that the fireworks have begun too prematurely. From the budget for 2013/14 it doesn't appear that elections will be held before May 2014. BJP should, therefore, need not act hastily and should assess the situation before deciding on the NDA candidature for PM. Having Modi as the PM candidate will have its pros on cons. The distinct disadvantage would be not only loss of existing allies but that it could block entry of prospective allies into the NDA. Alternative strategy could be Nitish Kumar as the choice for PM and Modi as the Deputy PM. If this combination works, it could allow not only entry of new allies but pave way for outside support by some parties and the majority can be worked out. The BJP should give a thought to this strategy.
If Modi becoming our PM is 'unstoppable' so be it.
As a CM of Gujarat, even after 3 terms he is not in good terms with USA. Locally if he is in good terms or not with the RSS etc will be seen only after the election date is announced.
Finally he will know if he has a ''free hand'' or is expected to Dance to others tunes only after he puts on the Dancing Shoes - Oops! the PM's Shoes.
For BJP to perform better they should use its more powerful engine. Modi got the charisma and vigour to fire the aspirations and propell towards the goal. JD(U) is nothing, only a regional party having a piggy ride. Let it decide its course. BJP a national party dont have to bend way for a regional party. It should be the other way. BJP should fight the election with out naming a PM candidate. All leaders should join in the fight to oust the corrupt regim. In the eventuality of BJPand its allies securing the majority then they can squabble about who is PM. No need to count the chiks before it hatches.
The two day National Council meeting of BJP is not without twists
and turns. The standing ovation given to Modi at the instance of
leadership of the BJP gives a clear signal of its having picked
its lot for the top job.Whether at all it will be wholly endorsed
is yet to be seen. The strict discipline as claimed by the party
has been given a go by with its gag order on the party leaders from
naming PM's candidate being greeted with neglect. As Rahul's jibe at
Marxist party in Tripura earned severe criticism, Modi's
utterances about PM are distasteful and lacks political decency. He
should have shied away from fitting into the shoes of the lower
rung leaders, who are normally greeted with cheers for their
reckless remarks.
