After enough noise unleashed on Deepavali day to rival a war zone, Chennai fell largely silent on Wednesday. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had promised to assess the noise levels during the festival, and its data will be keenly awaited. Read the Board's announcement >here .

Meanwhile, NGO Awaaz in Mumbai has used its sound meters to measure the noise in that city, and put out preliminary findings. Overall, the Maximum City was quieter than in the past, although there were a number of areas that proved to be an exception. The maximum decibel levels recorded were in the East of that city, touching 127 dB.
