>> Clarification

>>The introduction of some factual background details by The Hindu ’s editorial desk in an article written by Shiv Visvanathan (‘The Charge Of The Cow Brigade’, July 25, 2016) has resulted in a plagiarism complaint from a reader. On inquiry, it was found that two sentences introduced by the desk into Mr. Visvanathan’s article were a verbatim reproduction, without attribution, of sentences from an article that appeared in the Indian Express (“Gujarat Dalit flogging: ‘If we are treated this way for cleaning their filth, we won’t do it at all’,” July 24, 2016). The author of the article, Mr. Visvanathan, was in no way responsible for this.

>> Apology from the Editor

>>We apologise to readers for this unacceptable lapse from our editorial standards, for which the author of the article was in no way responsible. We have removed the unattributed lines from the web version of the article.
