A day after she described Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress as “two faces of the same coin,” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday that her party “does not and will not support” the BJP leader who is also the chairman of the party’s campaign committee.

Accusing the BJP of not being a responsible Opposition to the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, Ms. Banerjee said at an election rally at Rampurhat, Birbhum district, “There are no differences between the Congress and the BJP. We do not support Narendra Modi and will never support him.”

The BJP only attacks the UPA government when elections are round the corner, accused Ms. Banerjee.

The remarks are significant as the Chief Minister had called all non-Congress, non-BJP parties last month urging them to unite before the next general elections.

Referring to the Gujarat riots she said, “They (BJP) indulge in the politics of religion. The party neither serves the interests of Hindus or the Muslims.”

Ms. Banerjee said the BJP was serving as an agent of the CPI(M) by attempting to split the Trinamool Congress votes during the panchayat elections.
