Vaiko is spreading a “false propaganda” that Velupillai Prabakaran is alive, and other Tamil Nadu politicians talk about the rights of Sri Lankan Tamils “for their own politics,” says a former LTTE member who identified the body of his leader back in May 2009.
Dayanidhi, better known as Daya Master, who surrendered to the security forces days before the Sri Lankan war ended in 2009, and has since been “rehabilitated’’ by the government into a normal a life — with conditions attached — said there was absolutely no doubt that the LLTE leader was dead.
Dismissing talk of Tamil militancy rising again, he said the “only way” was for the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil National Alliance to find a political solution for the Tamil community.
“There is no chance for the LTTE to regroup. Only politically, they can put some pressure from abroad through diaspora Tamils,” he said on a recent afternoon when The Hindu met him at the Jaffna television station in Kokkavil where he is employed.
Some in the Tamil community who harbour extremist views will dismiss his words as those of a turncoat. But in fact, Daya Master represents the fatigue — evident across Jaffna — of the majority of Sri Lankan Tamils with 30 years of militancy and extremism in pursuit of separatism that took the community to the brink of disaster.
Daya Master used to be in the Tamil Tigers political wing, acting as their media coordinator, translating for international journalists, diplomats and workers of international NGOs who swarmed northern Sri Lanka when it was controlled by the LTTE.
After his surrender, along with some civilians, he was taken to Colombo, subjected to extensive interrogation and put behind bars.
He has been out on bail since September 2009 . But charges “that we were members of the LTTE” are still pending against him, he says. On the last Sunday of every month, he reports to the Jaffna police , and he cannot leave the country.
His rehabilitation is a job at Dan TV, a pro-Sri Lankan government Jaffna television channel. With his teacher wife and five-year-old daughter, he lives in Point Pedro. His wife recently received an award from President Mahinda Rajapaksa for topping a qualifying exam for principals.
The 58-year-old former English teacher now describes himself as “only an employee” of the LTTE. With the same smile and certainty he had 10 years ago when he spoke of the LTTE’s Eelam dream, he speaks now about Prabakaran’s “mistakes”: two lost opportunities to make peace — in 1987, during the India-Sri Lanka Accord, and in 2002, during the Norwegian mediated ceasefire.
“On the political side, the LTTE should have come to a solution. That’s the problem. But, you understand? No one was there to say anything against HIS way,” he said, emphasising the pronoun, “including the commanders.”
He expressed puzzlement that some Tamil Nadu politicians such as the MDMK chief were still telling their followers that Prabakaran is alive.
“Why do they do this Vaiko is doing false propaganda. [Prabakaran] died. This is the truth – he’s no more… I saw the body. Me and Karuna [who rebelled against Prabakaran in 2004 and quit the LTTE] identified the body.”
He was critical of other Tamil Nadu political leaders too, including DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
“Can we believe what [Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa] say now? They are saying some things only for doing their own politics. Tamil Nadu politicians have never been straightforward or spoken positively when it comes to Sri Lankan Tamils,” he said.
In the Northern Province, he said that there was a lot of development visible in all sectors. “Agriculture, construction etc. No one denies. The problem is political solution,” he says and hopes that the government and the Tamil National Alliance, which represents the majority of Tamils in parliament, will find a solution. “That’s the only way…Tamil people want solution.”

Well said Daya master. Hope Vaiko and other Tamil Nadu politicians who
have nothing else to do other than talking about Srilankan Tamil problem
got the message. It's time for Srilankan tamils to march forward. The
tamil politicians should try to find a political solution to the
problem.
The Hindu, you are doing a great job by interviewing a person who is under the clutches of Rajapakse and Co. You always try to appease you friend Rajapakse.
Even a child can think what would have made Daya master to give such interview with you. Can he speak a single word against the SL govt???
@Kumar : My cousins live in USA since 2 generations & if American's say such bad things about Indian's I will ask them to return to India rather than pick up guns & kill Americans.
You must remember that Daya Master is in Sri Lanka and he is not a free man ie: under army control. He is not allowed to leave the island nation. Ask him to come to India and give an interview to India Media. The tone will be different.
Mrs Indira Gandhi and MGR were forced to get involved after the Govt. sponsored anti-Tamil riots in July 1983 when over 3000 innocent Tamils were murdered in the Sinhala south (including burnt alive by Sinhal thugs and security forces turned a blind eye). India sent ships to transport Tamils to Jaffna as travel by rail or road considered unsafe and scary.
In the aftermath of the July 83 anti-Tamil riots, The President JR Jayawardene, gave an interview to UK's "The Daily Telegraph", this is what he said,"I am not worried about the Jaffna people..now I cannot think of them, not about their lives or their opinion, the more you put pressure in the north, the happier the Sinhala people here.. Really if I starve the Tamils out, the Sinhala will be happy.
The concluding words of Daya master holds the key “That’s the only way…Tamil people want solution.”
Whats the solution that all parties can agree to? can a region based solution such as 13A be a solution? That is what the Tamil politicians want and India and the International community wants but the question is does it solve the problems of the ordinary Tamil people as whole in the country.
Clearly it can not and the true solution should make the state treate every citizen equally,be they Sinhalese,Tamils,Muslims or any other minority.
Daya Master-You are a Srilankan and please focus on Srilankan issues. Indian Politicians will say anything which is meant for Indians and not for Srilankans.
Tamil people in Lanka should make a fresh start. Forget the past and Try to achieve social, economical and political equality through rational ways considering current situation and not the past. Use your reasoning, dont believe politicians from Tamil Nadu who have betrayed tamils in Lanka and Tamilnadu as well.
Daya master is right, Tamil Nadu politicians are self-seeking, a humbel request to Sri Lankan Tamils, rise as one movement and tell Tamil Nadu and India to keep of your issues, Sri Lankan Government will automatically deal with you in the best possible terms, it is Indian leaders ranging from MGR and Indira Gandhi who did every bit to destroy peace in Sri Lanka and now the smaller fries are still continuing with.
Dayanidhi is 100% right. It is time for the TN politicians to completely leave the Sri Lankan Tamil issues in the hands of the locals and to the Government. But for the support of the TN Politicians, Tamil educated migrants who made good living in other countries, the support of INGOs, the Tamil issue would have been solved in 1987 itself or in 2002. In fact Mr.Prabakaran would have become Jaffna CM and would have led his people to all round development. LTTE’s adamant attitude came mainly because it thought all would support, whatever it does in the name of freedom. Sri Lankan Govt., despites its big brother attitude, would have allowed the Tamils to peacefully settle, had the rebels accepted the peace offer. Evidently, LTTE hardened attitude, like the Egyptian, BC time hardened attitude as reported in the Bible resulted in the total annihilation of almost all the top leaders and many able bodied good Tamil Law abiding citizens.
HINDU may write n number of articles on the SL issue. But the bottom line is..
Tamils in SL were/are oppressed, suppressed and treated as second class citizen by Sinhalese government.
YES.Well Said.Even there is a political party in TN for Srilankan Tamils.
But the point is that there were no real solutions for their sufferings.Politicians using the sentiments of Srilankan Tamils is common during every election/political rallies.
I urge "The Hindu" that this article "LETTER FROM LANKA" should reach the whole TN People.
Yes , Daya is correct. Only Negotiations will bring ever lasting peace
in srilanka . Voilence can not be justified even if it is for right
cause.
Venkat Karthik
Daya Master is right. This is the point of view that was drowned the din from the extreme positions held by LTTE and the GoSL.
The LTTE will not be regrouping anytime soon. He is right. They are wounded and tired. What will be nice is if they don't re-group because there was no reason for that to happen. Unfortunately their fatigue is the reason for no war now. The reasons for their fight are still there. If the Sri Lankan Government does not learn its lesson, a new brand of violence will start. It is in the DNA of human beings to fight for justice. If the state does not provide that, the people will seek that WHEN THEY CAN.
Thank you Daya Master. Now, hopefully our pretending politicians will turn their focus on Indian issues.
