A three-member team from the Survey of India will visit Kaverirajapuram in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district for a spot probe into the allegations of land-grab levelled against Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran.
Major General Dr. R. Sivakumar, M. Dharmaraj and Sanjaykumar will conduct an enquiry into issues relating to land held by the judge in the village, the Ministry of Science and Technology has informed Tamil Nadu revenue authorities.
The probe is a sequel to the request made by Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan to the Centre that an investigation be conducted by an independent agency to verify the allegations as reflected in the two reports sent by the Tiruvallur Collector. An independent probe was suggested as Justice Dinakaran denied as false, erroneous and motivated the Collector’s findings that he had encroached upon 199 acres of government land.
The Survey of India’s decision to map the area is independent of the Law Ministry rejecting the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to elevate Justice Dinakaran to the Supreme Court without any further probe.
On receipt of the December 4 letter from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Tamil Nadu Revenue Secretary, in turn, informed the Collector on Friday asking him to make arrangements for the probe. The letter says: “Please ensure that the district administration provides all assistance and police protection at the time of inspection during which representatives of Justice Dinakaran may be present.” No time frame has been mentioned in the letter for completing the survey.
The team is expected to submit its report to the Centre for being forwarded to the CJI for further action.
