The incident of the suicide of a student of the city's La Martiniere School four days after he was caned by the principal was raised in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday with the Speaker directing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to make a statement in the House.

Md. Refatullah, an MLA of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, in a mention, sought to know whether measures had been put in place to prevent such incidents.

Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim directed the Chief Government Whip Syed. Md. Masih to ensure that a statement is made in the House by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the action taken by the government.

The February incident snowballed into a major controversy with the boy's father filing a police complaint on June 7, alleging that corporal punishment had been meted out to his son.
