Police on Tuesday night registered two new First Information Reports (FIRs) against the former Director General of Police, S.P.S. Rathore, and other police officials for allegedly slapping false cases against the brother of a 14-year-old budding tennis player, who committed suicide after being molested by Rathore.
The charges include attempt to murder and doctoring the post-mortem report.
Superintendent of Police Maneesh Chaudhary told journalists the action came after the victim’s father and brother filed two complaints with him. The decision was taken after Mr. Chaudhary met DGP Ranjiv Dalal and held consultations.
Mr. Chaudhary had initially stated that FIRs would be registered after taking legal opinion as it was a 19-year-old matter. He did not comment on if and when Mr. Rathore would be arrested. “We will probe the matter and the law will take its course as per investigation.”
The complaint filed by the father said the inquest proceedings carried out by ASI Jai Narayan, conducted in Chandigarh was without any jurisdiction as the Haryana police had no locus standi to conduct the proceedings in the union territory.
The complaint filed by the brother said seven FIRs for different offences, including auto theft, were registered against him to victimise him after the molestation of his sister.
The complaints demanded that a case/FIR be registered against Mr. Rathore, Mr. Jai Narayan, sub-inspector Prem Dutt, ASI Sewa Singh and other officials, under a dozen sections of the IPC covering fraud, false cases, illegal confinement, and misuse of power.
They described themselves as ‘the unfortunate brother/father of the deceased budding tennis player, who had raised her voice against S.P.S. Rathore who had molested her and consequently even died on account of miseries suffered at the instance of Rathore.’
