The State expert panel on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) that studied the safety arrangements in nuclear reactors is expected to submit its report to the government shortly after going through documents and recording the apprehensions of the local community.
Though the anti-KKNPP struggle committee has termed that Sunday's talks with the State expert panel as only “a beginning”, it seems that there would not be any more talks between the two sides as the experts were likely to submit their report in a fortnight.
Speaking to reporters here on Sunday after the talks with the members of anti-KKNPP Struggle Committee, Iniyan, convener of the State expert panel and Director, Institute for Energy Studies, Anna University, Chennai, said the State expert team, which was given the tasks of ascertaining the safety features of the 2 X 1,000 MWe VVER reactors and understanding the apprehensions of the local community living close to the KKNPP site, inspected the “first-of-its kind safety measures” incorporated in the nuclear reactors. Since the entire complex including the reactor building and the diesel generator building and the control unit had been firmly located at a reasonable height from the shoreline, it would not be affected by tsunami or earthquake with the magnitude of even 6.50 on Richter scale.
“The reactor has seven safety arrangements and we could fully understood all these safety measures,” Dr. Iniyan said. On the apprehensions of the local community, he said the team had understood them after talking to the representatives of the protesters. “With the submission of our report, our task will be completed,” Dr. Iniyan said. Commenting on denial of permission to the KKNPP officials to explain the salient safety features of the reactor to the State expert panel members, he said it was most unfortunate.

Fukushima Accident has come handy to the false propaganda by anti-KKNPP Struggle Committee, concealing the main cause of the failure. As the 8.9 earthquake occurred and the tsunami struck the Japanese shores the nuclear power plants were stopped automatically. But even though the fission reaction came to a halt, decay heat is generated inside the reactor core which needs to be cooled down by cooling systems by circulating cold water. But the tsunami that swiftly followed the earthquake swamped the facility and damaged the generators and power systems that ran cooling mechanisms. Japanese officials concluded that the plant was not designed to withstand the 40-foot tsunami that hit it on March 11. On the contrary VVER-1000 Reactors have four independent cooling loops with passive heat removal system to provide cooling for the removal of decay heat.KKNPP has been designed to withstand all eventualities including tsunami possible in Seismic Zone II.It is safe and people need not fear.
For the past 25 years anti-nuclear campaigners have been racking up
the figures for deaths and diseases caused by the Chernobyl disaster,
and parading deformed babies like a mediaeval circus. They claim that
985,000 people have been killed by Chernobyl, and that it will
continue to slaughter people for generations to come. These claims are
false.UN Scientific Committee report says out of emergency workers at
Chernobyl,134 suffered acute radiation syndrome; 28 died soon
afterwards. Nineteen others died later not from diseases associated
with radiation. The remaining 87 have suffered other complications,
including four cases of solid cancer and two of leukaemia. In the rest
of the population there have been few cases of thyroid cancer among
young children due to the failure to prevent people from drinking milk
contaminated with the radioactive iodine isotope 131. Otherwise there
is no evidence of any other health effect. Public is being misled by
false propaganda by vested interests.
@Ramaswami Kumar: How correct is the film your referring about? Now a
days by computer graphics all sort of misinformation and
misconceptions can be shown on film, like the one in "DAM 999".India
follows a closed fuel cycle and all the fissionable material from
spent fuel are recovered and accounted. No radio active waste is ever
dumped in sea. IAEA guidelines are being strictly followed in this
regard.People with inadequate information on a how Nuclear Power Plant
operates are getting easily carried away by propaganda film being
circulated by anti-Nuclear lobby worldwide.EUROPE with comparably less
power need can probably do without Nuclear Power Plant and not developing nations like India. The propaganda against nuclear power
is a ploy to prevent other nations from developing and acquiring the
high technology.India with abundant thorium resources will one day
become self sufficient and super power.
The discussion was about nuclear pollution whether in Canada or Japan or anywhere else and that nuclear power plants pose an unacceptable problem in the form of nuclear wastes. The relevant issue for a nuclear park is wastes here and the film was an invaluable reference for showing how the wastes problem can never be solved and are being dumped in the oceans even today via outfalls. Without seeing the film and the context you can say the refugee problem is irrelevant. It is goddam relevant as you can see from the section discussions, whether she concocted a story or not. Dont fool the public please, but admire them for the relevant fight against the nuclear monsters. Period. If India authorities go against the valid wishes of the people it is suicidal in the face of the nuclear infinite dangers. It only happened that the film reference happened to be given in that section. It could have been given in any section on the website. Everything is relevant. Nukes cost infinity to people.
@ Ramaswami Kumar: The news section at the website mentioned by you
merely says that "A Japanese woman who claimed exposure to radiation
from damaged nuclear reactors has been denied refugee status in Canada
[...] She claimed her life was in danger from radioactive contaminants
that spewed into the environment from the Fukushima plant." The woman
seems to be more interested in getting refugee status and appears to
have cooked up stories. Why she has to come all the way to Canada and
seek refuge? She is another example of misguided lot. Please do not
link irrelevant things to KKNPP issue. TN Govt should waste no more
time and crush the unlawful activities of the anti-KKNPP struggle
committee and pave way for the commissioning of the reactors.
enenews is a site where things like Fukushima are discussed from an overall perspective. Yesterday(19 Feb 2012) I came across a film of more than one and a half hours on the horrendous crimes committed by the nuclear industry and still being committed. I have mailed it to many including fisherfolk. I do hope the committee is aware of this crime and recommends immediately to stop nukes. Period. The section on enenews is titled: Canada denies refugee status to Japanese trying to escape Fukushima radiation.
