Saidai S. Duraisamy of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) romped home with a margin of over 5.20 lakh votes in the election to the post of Chennai Mayor. The results of the election were declared on Friday and he is set to become the first AIADMK Mayor of the city.
The party also got an overwhelming majority in the 200-member Chennai Corporation Council. It was the first election after the Corporation limits were expanded by merging several adjacent local bodies.
Mr. Duraisamy defeated his nearest rival and outgoing Mayor of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) M. Subramanian by polling 12.40 lakh votes. Mr. Subramanian got 7.20 lakh votes. A total of 23.15 lakh voters had exercised their franchise on Monday to elect the Mayor and 200 councillors. In the recent elections to the State Assembly, Mr. Duraisamy gave a tough fight to former Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the Kolathur constituency.
The thumping victory of the AIADMK in the Council elections and that of its Mayoral candidate is expected to help in introducing more schemes and implementing development projects in the city. With the AIADMK being in power in the State, the civic body is better placed in seeking assistance. Mr. Duraisamy is likely to assume office on Tuesday. Mr. Stalin was elected Mayor in 1996 and in 2001.
However, he had to resign as a one-man, one-post rule was introduced during the second tenure.
After that, Deputy Mayor Karate Thyagarajan was holding charge of the post of Mayor till the elections in 2006.

Sir, I was very happy to note that garbage clearance will be your top most priority for Chennai city. Regret to note that after two months of coming to power, there is absolutely no change anywhere in city. Most of the places and even Poonamallee main road is full of garbage.
Sir, I am Native of Chennai City by birth. Now I am 68 years old. I am expecting more than the ex-mayor done in the Chennai City for the welfare and betterment of the voted people.
Sir hearty congratulations
Sir, I am very proude of you have elected mayor in greater chennai people are expected more more from you to clean chennai city education level comparing with matriculation, traffic arrangement, public greiveance cell at 24 hours, to clear drainage water around chennai road and very important no corrouption in chennai corporation officers and division counselors fast and quick action from public matters.
Weldone and congraultions Mr. Saidaiyar. Hope you can remember me, myself is son of Late Appu Nair of West Saidapet.
Thiruvalar Saidai Doraiswamy avargale,
Pl. accept my congratulations to you on becoming Mayor of the wonderful city of chennai. This assignment is a reward to your sincerity, devotion, dedication and sense of duty in you. Our fullest co-opearation can always be counted as long as the activities undertaken will benefit the masses and leave the city Clean and Green.
Upon swearing in, you have given first and foremost priority to garbage clearance. Thoughtful idea and a pressing one indeed. In fact the corporation as of now is not fully geared up to clear the amount of solid waste generated in the city. Moreover the attitude of the public also needs a drastic change.
As an innovation , you may involve the chennaiites in garbage cleaning by calling for volunteers to take part. Citizens in ages 10 to 65, shall support the corporation staff in the upkeep of their area at leaset one day a week.
Throwing garbage is not a right, lending physical support is not loss of dignity.
A common citizen expects only few basic amenities. Clean City (removal of Garbage), Good Roads, Clean Water and uninterrupted power supply. Rest you can be assured of no anti incumbency for a long time!
People selected the right man, sincere and honest person.
I expect next 5 years our chennai will be very cute, very clean and very
beautiful metro city. So sir once again congrats. Thanks for Chennai people for voting and selecting Mayor
Sir u already so many people developed civil service commission so New mayor Congratulations.
I would complement comments of Mr.Sivasankaran Krishnasamy.
I am neither pro to DMK or AIADMK. However its important (while we congratulate the winner and wish him all success) not to miss out appreciating the good deed and conduct of incumbent Subramaniam, good job Sir. Like Mr.Krishnasamy points out, his good deed and respect earned is much regarded and request him to take it in stride. This failure has to be attributed only to the corrupt party he is associated with.
At Chennai it is needed for travelers and stranded ordinary people accommodated safely for night stay. With family members to spend a night stay decently(if one doesn't have relatives or financial facility) a provision with nominal charges to be arranged. Staying in public places like rail and bus terminus with children and belongings is a nightmare. The police and urchins delivers the same troubles for this helpless people. The arrangement may be next to a public place and worth stay for a nigh and a day, not to allow them stay for more than this.
Congratulations Mr.Duraisamy.
Congratulations to MS.Jayalalitha for continuing the AIADMK sweep in Tamil Nadu. When AIADMK was swept back to power, many of us felt that it was our independance day. We were no more in the corrupt hands of the DMK.The slew of welfare measures introduced/indicated by Ms.Jayalalitha has warmed the hearts of Tamil Nadu. We all hope this good rule will continue and make the next 5 years the golden period in Tamil Nadu.
Congrats to Thiru Saidai Duraiswamy. Hope your yeoman service in the field of IAS education will certainly give a new vision to administer Chennai Metro in more scientific and modern way. People of Chennai feel lucky. A Right man in Right Place. Please keep it up. At the same time don't yield to petty politics and treat the wards are as equal as your wards. Don't discriminate the people who have voted for other parties/DMK.
Congrats........ Everybody looking for lot of changes after you have been elected. As the proverb saying " Men may come and go but the Name remains longer"...... We believe lot of changes and development happen in the Chennai Corporation during your tenure the same as your name recognised in Manitha Neya Arakattalai. Best Wishes to you..........
Yes, the people of chennai city has elected the right candidate who is already a reputed personality and uplifted poor class people's life and developed the Institute "Manitha Neya Arakattalai" really speaking to bring such institute in the present scenario given economic condition / cost of living, it needs much sacrifice, energy and money, above all generous mind, no comparison, Yes I on behalf of tamil nadu people salute you sir by bowing my head and you are a role model. Let your services, dedication, helping hand wakes up each and every poor class people all over tamil nadu and teach good lesson to the corrupt and backbitting politicians. All the best!
Mr. Subramaniam is an honest man personally. He did a lot of good work during his tenure as a Mayor of Chennai. His loss in this election is purely due to the party he belongs. But surely Mr. Duraisamy has good image and people expect a lot of good work from him.
Congrats Sir.
I would suggest a few priorities to the new Hon'ble Mayor: 1. Garbage removal on a continuous basis. 2. Building and maintaining public toilets. 3. Cleaning up the gutters so that the rain water could smoothly flow into the drains.
Mr. Duraisamy should rein in on the Ward Councilors ensuring corruption free administration in the Chennai Corporation. The callous and corrupt practices only costed DMK very badly and hope the new Mayor does not let that happen in his term. In fact, the x-Mayor, Mr. M. Subramanyam earned a good reputation for being relatively honest person but the overall adverse image of the DMK councilors had costed him very badly.
PERFECT CHOICE AT THE PERFECT TIME. When he can make and guide many IAS & IPS officers, he can be good role model and also have good administration. I Came to know that anyone joining his IAS institute "Manitha Neya Arakattalai" have to promise that they are against corruption. So, we hope we can have "corruption free MAYOR". :)
Kudos to you and your(our) party well deserved for the victory under able CM.We beg you to please give top proprity to remove garbage, the immediate need of the hour.thanks
Right man for fast development of chennai city.
He is the right man for this post.
congrats sir!!! we are expecting a lot from you.... all the best
People select the right man of humanity, sincere and honest person
A well-deserved victory for a longstanding loyalist.Hope he will live up to his reputation.
Once again its an anti-incumbency show, we only hope that the new Mayor does his bit of work for Chennai like Stalin and Subramani, their hard work will not be forgotten but we expect more from Duraisami especially Jayalalitha has already claimed the victory as "Testimony for good governance"
Right man for the right job !!!
The victory brings humbleness on the part of victorious. Let us hope the rulers, who are now elected by electorate humble themselves and serve the people without fear or favour.
.. Very Glad !! I had read about this man training BC ,OBC cnadidates for IAS.and his institute has produced many IAS officers. . I request DuraiSamy through this column that due to poisonous nature of Karuna many Brahmins are unable to continue their higher education. Incidentally Karuna & Co came to power through the thoughtless action of Shri.Rajaji which he repented later on . Durai ,there are still many poor Brahmins [cooks ,servers ,Savundi Brahmins ,the often ridiculed Satries ,Kurukals ,many Brahmin Intelligent girls still languishing because of the curse of the caste. Please help them !!! They will serve India better . Many of us like them left TN [though we still speak Tamil & teach Tamil to our children ] ! Durai ,we can't hate Muslims just because they also destroyed HIndus once ! So why only hate Brahmins ! Neo - MettuKudi makkal like Karuna [ we curse him daily ] still spread Brahmin hatred though Brahmins are neither powerful politically nor adorning Government Instituti
Well done,mr.duraisamy.congatulations .
Let not this victory go to their heads. No rhetoric talking and abusing.Let them show the world that how organised they are and how good they are in implementing welfare schemes to poor. WATER should be made available at all times. Food is made available at a cost which common man can afford. May god bless them to achieve further goals.
