Prohibitory orders are in force in 88 villages in the district in view of the November 7 attack on three Dalit colonies and the protests and counter-protests that followed.
District Collector and Magistrate R. Lilly promulgated the orders on Friday under Section 144 of the Cr. PC, a release issued by her said.
In the wake of the violence in the Dalit colonies of Natham, Anna Nagar and Kondampatti at Naikkankottai village, a few sporadic confrontations between caste groups were reported in other parts of the district.
Though these did not escalate into major clashes, the prevailing atmosphere posed a threat to peace, the release said.
Two days ago, a Dalit organisation from Karnataka entered Natham colony and made some remarks against the State Government.
This created commotion in the colony.
The group was swiftly sent back by the police, the sources said.
While the Collector could not be reached for comment, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA from Harur P. Dilli Babu, who took part in a peace committee meeting chaired by her, told The Hindu that he opposed the prohibitory orders on the grounds that this came in the way of expressing solidarity with the affected Dalits.
