The newly appointed convener of the Puducherry unit of the DMK, M.A.S. Subramanian, on Sunday hoped that the party, which ruled the Union Territory thrice, would regain the old glory by galvanising the rank and file of the party and it would show its strength in the ensuring local body elections.
“I am the man of confidence and known for hard work. The foundation of the party is still strong. We will rejuvenate it with the support of all rank and file and we will take the party to rule Puducherry again,” he told TheHindu when he was asked about the change of guard in the Puducherry unit when it was facing volatile political situation due to factional feud.
Mr. Subramanian, a two-time former MLA, was given a rousing reception when he came to the party office ‘Kalaigner Illam,’ on Candappa Mudaliar Street here, which was donated by him to the party. As a mark of respect he did present a shawl to former Chief Minister R.V. Janakiraman, who was with the helm of affairs of the party during the last 17 years. Flanked by frontline leaders of DMK’s Puducherry unit he also addressed among the party cadres, who came in large numbers and sought their support.
Asked about the cooperation of some of the leaders, who were reportedly disappointed over his appointment as convener, Mr. Subramanian said he met all aspiring and sought their full cooperation to rejuvenate the party. A couple of leaders could not make it to the Saturday’s event due to personal reasons.
“We have a number of pressing assignments. The immediate priority is to win in the forthcoming local body elections with thumping majority. It has given an opportunity to prove our mettle. We will work towards that,” he said about the immediate priority of him.
On the possibility of facing the local body elections by forming an electoral alliance, Mr. Subramanian said though the party faced the Assembly elections with the Congress party, it was for the DMK’s high command to decide the future alliance.
Coming down heavily on N. Rangasamy government in Puducherry, he said the DMK was not at all happy with the governance of it.
It had not fulfilled the promise given by him during elections. The Law & Order situation was poor since he took over the reigns of the government. “We are totally unpleasant and we will discuss it with our party workers,” Mr. Subramanian added.
