Women are not safe in Tamil Nadu, said Kanimozhi, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP, addressing a demonstration organised by the party’s women’s wing before the Collectorate here on Wednesday. She condemned the murder of a 13-year-old schoolgirl near Thathankulam railway station on December 20.
The girl appeared to have been gang-raped, she claimed. The MP doubted that the real culprit had been caught. Parents were scared to send their girl children to educational institutions, shattering the dreams of late Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai, social reformer Periyar and M. Karunanidhi who advocated girls’ education.
A girl was sexually abused in Virudhachalam in Cuddalore district, an acid attack was made on a B. Tech. student and two children were victimised sexually in Salem. Students were calling for capital punishment for rapists in Delhi. Around 25 per cent of girls of 15 years and below were falling prey to sexual abuse.
“Is it a curse to be born a girl child?” Ms. Kanimozhi asked.
Earlier, Ms. Kanimozhi, accompanied by former Ministers and party leaders, visited the victim’s house at Kilakulam and consoled the mother of the deceased. She handed over a solatium of Rs. 2 lakh to the family. Party workers from Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts participated in the demonstration.
