Caste Hindu students keep away, even sit separately in class
Even as they are yet to get over the November 7 attack on their houses, the children of Natham, Kondampatti and Anna Nagar Dalit colonies in Naikkankottai village have run into another problem in one of the schools: caste Hindu students are keeping away from them for the last two days at the Government High School.
The students are being taken in police vehicles to schools in and around Dharmapuri and brought back home. They are still in the grip of fear, the students said on Friday.
M. Nishanthi of Natham Colony, a Class X student of the school, said after the attack, students from the three colonies resumed going to schools and colleges on Wednesday. But, for the last two days, caste Hindu students were keeping away, even sitting separately in class. M. Suresh of the same colony, recalling the attack, said he was attending classes amid an atmosphere of fear.
When this was brought to the notice of Headmaster of the Government High School G. Ramakrishnan, he said steps would be taken immediately to eliminate caste discrimination.
A police officer in-charge of security for the students said that out of 217 school students and 70 college students in the three colonies, 24 attended college and 209 attended school for the past two days. S. Amuthavalli, Chief Educational Officer, told The Hindu that the department would take steps to weed out discrimination, if any, in the school. Both Dalit and caste Hindu students would be given counselling. The Dalit students said that the counselling given by Superintendent of Police Asra Garg and a team of doctors headed by Resident Medical Officer of Government Hospital in Dharmapuri M. Elangovan was helpful. Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to CB CID for investigation.

The Dravidian movement which shaped TN history for over 5 decades tried to isolate the brahmins as the cause of the caste evils. Such incidents repeated prove how wrong the Dravidian leaders are. One reader has correctly asked that these "caste Hindus" have to be identified by caste. Had they been brahmins, I am sure they wouldn't be called "Caste Hindus"... Are we then to conclude that brahmins are "Casteless Hindus" ?
Anyone who is sensitive and sensible can't tolerate and digest this barbaric crime perpetrated on innocent Dalits by pre-Adam apes. The paradox is that the Dalits were not attacked by so called "savarnas"but by the "avarnas"among Hindus [OBC],these "neosavarnas" themselves were victims of stupid caste system!!?and are enjoying all concessions under OBC quota.so why should they become intolerant to resurrection of DALITS?
white people in USA accepted a black american as president,it shows
crooked mentality of some caste people,PMK has to explain to the people because its some party workes did it.
If they are all Christians, why call it castist attack. Just call it as
communal attacks
What is the meaning of this term that The Hindu uses - "caste hindus"?
Why can't their caste be named? If the perpetrators were Brahmins, they
would surely be named. So, why this soft corner for "caste hindus"?
As long as dalit colony is separate from the caste Hindus village this
"compartmentalisation" be it in taking water from common tanks/entry
into village temples/seats in village schools/buying of caste Hindus lands not to speak of houses & the perpetual tag of dalit/colony man is bound to exist. No easy/short cut solution to this problem.
Agraharam was a street within the village & so it got vanished easily.
Caste Hindus at village level are so rigid/hard in their mental outlook towards colony people though both are indistinguishable
in their physical appearances & behaviour/culture etc.
Untouchability is a sin; Untouchability is a crime; Untouchability is inhuman
Poisoning the child's thoughts processes at that very young age. One lives in total fear and the other thinks that his primary job is to intimidate the other. these issues are very much prevalent in today's life. Just that most of them suffer in silence.
The Politics of hate can only be overcome by the power of education. But, What would one do if the hallowed portals of education itself stands helpless..
I cannot believe when Hindus call themselves tolerant, kind and good. They are ready to go to the west sit, live, eat and study together with beat eating people but in India they refuse to do the same with their own fellow Hindus. They even beat them rape them and torture them for small offences. Well then why are these upper class dislike them when they convert into Islam or Christians.
I just wonder who these 'caste Hindus' are? Surely if the victimised
people are identified as 'dalits' why not identify the caste of the
perpetuators called 'caste Hindu'?? Why generalise them under
'caste Hindu'???
@reddy
For Dalits to be considered "true" Hindus, they have to be able to share water, schools and places of worship with the "other" Hindus..Simple!
These kind of issues shoud be dealt at a highest level ie the chief
minister of the state should intervene. Discrimination in any form is
a threat to move forward in a fastly developing world. Involvement
and segregation at the level of school children is the most
worrisome. Sowing seeds of discrimination/inequality/caste may be
satisfying the elders of a community or a particular group but for
the state/country it is deeply hurting and simply- moving in the
wrong direction.
It is a shame to all Indian and even humanity to discriminate against caste. What is the purpose of education if we are unable to fight against caste related violence. 60 years ago there was Brahmin, Non Brahmin discrimination. In Perior's "Why commununal G.O" he quoted 3% of Brahmin's are holding 97% of jobs. With reservation and education it is eradicated now. I am sure with education we can uplift dalits and soon these kind of issues will go away. As actor Surya suggested, let us all help poor to get education to curb this social evil.
Who are these "caste" Hindus? Has "caste" system not been eliminated from Tamil Nadu already due to the "pioneering" work of rationalist leaders EVR and Annadurai? Did not the previous govts remove the caste surnames from the street names and thus eliminate caste ( akin to driving away Hindi by "tarring" Hindi
nameboards)?
Well done, the state is rightly going in the wrong direction, all due
to some irresponsible leaders. Until the State Govt takes strict action
against this (which they don't seem to) the issues are only gonna
raise.
what does it mean by Caste Hindu? Are Dalits not Hindus?
