The Communist Party of India (CPI) has flayed the opposition parties in the Legislative Assembly for boycotting the session where the new Speaker assumed office.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, national council member of the party R. Viswanathan said since the opposition parties did not contest the Speaker election they should have attended the session to announce the unanimous appoint of Mr. Sabapathy alias V. Kothandaraman for the post. The voters of the region have given a decisive mandate for a non-Congress government and this political change should be accepted in a democratic manner, he said.
Mr. Sabapathy was a former Congress worker since he was not given recognition in the party he quit, he said the Congress legislators should have at least considered the Speaker's seniority in politics. On the Congress party's protest over retrenchment of workers, he said backdoor appointment of all forms should be abolished.
The Chief Minister should join political parties such as CPI to fight against the Union Government's politicise rather than trying to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
