Strongly criticising AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa for her statement on the killing of a fisherman by the Sri Lankan Navy, the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, on Saturday asked as to what she was doing when similar incidents occurred during her tenure.
She also kept writing letters to the Centre, he said.
Replying to questions, Mr. Karunanidhi said as soon as the information regarding the killing of the fisherman, Chellappan, reached him, he was the first to condemn the incident and also ordered the release of Rs.3 lakh assistance on behalf of the government to the bereaved family. He addressed letters to the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers the same day.
Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, had also replied in a letter that he had spoken to the Prime Minister in the matter and taken steps. A demonstration was also held by the DMK's fishermen wing on Saturday to condemn the killing.
