“There is no Naxal movement in Tamil Nadu since we are maintaining ‘effective and sustained vigil’ on our border and hill districts,” said Director General of Police (DGP) K. Ramanujam on Monday.
Talking to reporters after chairing a review meeting on law and order and major crimes with senior officers of the Salem range, the DGP, scotching rumours and speculative reports that the State was facing Naxal threat from neighbouring States, pointed out that stringent action had led to the arrest of some leaders and cadre of the movement in southern districts.
“As in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, we have raised a Special Anti-Naxal Squad in the south and launched a strong campaign in the villages of Theni district. The STF in the Mettur camp will continue to comb the forests for any suspicious movement. We maintain our vigil against anti-socials without any let-up.” On the recent arrest of a Nigerian on the charges of smuggling narcotics, the DGP said that the police would take action against anyone who broke the law.
He said that patrolling had been increased to prevent thefts and house breaks.
The DGP, refused to comment on the murder of DMK leader and brother of former minister K N Nehru, N. Ramanujam, in Tiruchi saying the investigation had been handed over to the CB-CID.
On the murder of the DK functionary Palani at Thali, he said seven persons had been arrested and six others had surrendered. “investigation is on.”
