The Chennai Corporation on Friday retrieved nearly 30 grounds of land near Chennai’s posh >Boat Club area from an encroacher.

According to the existing guideline value, the land is worth Rs.161 crore.

A total of 29.18 grounds of land, which had been encroached upon along the banks of the Adyar near Turnbulls Road, was originally supposed to be part of a park measuring 65 grounds. The Highways and School Education departments, which possessed the land, had, in 2005, given ‘no objection’ certificates to the Corporation for the creation of the park.

However, the Corporation was able to create a park only on a portion of the land measuring 36.30 grounds.

The remaining portion, which is in proximity to the posh Boat Club area, had three illegally erected structures that prevented development of the area into a bigger park.

The encroachments on property with survey numbers 3884/276 and 3884/269 of Mylapore village were removed by officials following the intervention of the Madras High Court.

According to Corporation officials, the Madras High Court had, a few months ago, dismissed a petition from Rama Venkatanarayanan, who claimed that the property belonged to him. The action by the civic body follows the vacation of the stay granted by the Madras High Court. The property with survey no. 3884/276 measured 57.11 grounds, of which a portion was handed over by the Highways Department to the Corporation for the creation of the park. The adjoining piece of property measuring 55.12 grounds with survey number 3884/269 originally belonged to School Education Department.

There was no resistance from the encroacher when Corporation officials demolished the three structures.
