Political vendetta behind neglect of landmark buildings: Karunanidhi

July 04, 2012 03:16 am | Updated November 17, 2021 12:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Political vendetta and personal animosity are behind the State government neglecting many landmark buildings, including the Anna Centenary Library, Medical College annexe on the premises that once housed the Central Prison and the police Commissioner’s office in Vepery planned during his regime, DMK president M. Karunanidhi alleged on Tuesday.

In a statement, he said that the new Secretariat building on Anna Salai was discarded because it was constructed by the DMK government. “The public plaza in front of the building had a fishing pond and there were hundreds of colourful fish. It was a feast for visitors to the building. After the new government assumed office, the fish were not fed and they died.”

The DMK leader said that when the Central Prison was shifted to Puzhal, he allotted the place for constructing a building for the Madras Medical College. The construction was over, but the building had not yet been inaugurated.

“Similarly, a Rs.100-crore project for building a new office for the Chennai Police Commissionerate was conceived and implemented. That also remains unused,” he said.
