The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a constituent of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, on Tuesday urged the Union government to press the United Nations for a referendum on a ‘Tamil Eelam' in Sri Lanka.
Welcoming the demand for the referendum made by the Tamil community, Mr. Karunanidhi recalled his earlier remarks that if at all he had one unfulfilled desire, it was the creation of a separate State for the Sri Lankan Tamils.
The DMK leader said that many new countries had come into being following the U.N. intervention and referendum. The U.N. should take steps to conduct a referendum that could lead to the formation of ‘Eelam.' “India should also put pressure on this issue.”
Reacting to the criticism against his party's decision to keep away from the Parliamentary delegation to Sri Lanka, Mr. Karunanidhi said that when the war in Sri Lanka was at his peak, the DMK had dispatched letter after letter to the Prime Minister, sent telegrams, organised all-party meetings, rallies, human chain and fast.
“This will explain the truth to people.”
Mr. Karunanidhi rejected Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's claim that the AIADMK rule had transformed the functioning of the police and ensured an atmosphere of stability, peace and order and said the State had witnessed 385 murders, 178 chain-snatchings, 34 robberies and more than 10 custodial deaths.

Sri Lanka is an artificial state illegally formed by British without any participation by Tamils of Eelam. Eelam Tamils have zero trust in Sinhalese nation's ability to maintain law and order with equality to all citizens. Diplomats should stop lecturing to Eelam Tamils about sovereign and unitary state as their own children go to top schools around the world and enjoy organic food.
Just look at the composition of Sri Lankan military force. It is 100% mono-ethnic Sinhalease and they have no shame about it. Watch the cell phone video of these soldier executing blind-folded young Tamil boys and men. Look at the naked bodies of Isaipiria (a mother of a 3 month old girl, raped and killed by the very soldiers) and other young women. Will you ever like to live with such people as your neighbors. Sri Lankan soldiers bring disgrace to Buddhism.
Tamils all over the world will work relentlessly for the birth of Tamil Eelam. Sinhalese can carry their own weight and determine their destiny.
Be aware that Sri Lanka is a sovereign nation, what ever is done in Sri Lanka has to be decided by all Sri Lankans, not Indians or foreigners. Even if all Tamils in Sri Lanka decide to have separate country in North East the rest of Sri Lankans who are also the stakeholders of the country would never agree or allow that. Karunanidhi can dream on!
Indians want Sri Lanka to live in peace and united. All citizens should have equal rights.Every srilankan have the opportunity to become President or Prime Minister of Sri lanka as in other countries. You cannot anymore keep Tamils under your feet and allow them to die slowly, breathe their last minute by minute. Come to terms with the Tamils being their brethern.Try to live united and peacefully with equal rights.Tamils have no other option, but to seek Independence.Look at their past history and their rich language and cultural background. They can not made to suffer like people in Congo,Rwanda, Ethiopia and Bosnia.Live peacefully and unitedly,Else allow them to live and lead their own life peacefully and honourably.Sinhalese should decide, whether they want Tamils with them,if not, allow them to go free. They have no right to kill them If their demand for Independence gained strength day by day, blame should be made only against Sri Lanka,as they are pushing them to seek to escape this way
Mr Manoharan and Mr Abhinav Gautam have not understood the politics of S/Lanka. There was continueous case of pograms and total discrimination against tamils for the last 64 years by the Singhalese. Complete disregard for tamil lives, culture and 'land grabbing activities'. The Singhales 'Mahavamsa mind-set' and natural dislike for tamil language which made the 'Only Singhala language act' to be implemented. There is no intention at all by the Eeelam tamils and Tamil Nadu to create one nation which was played up by Singhala Govt to hood-wink the New Delhi Govt.
Let the political party leaders from Tamil Nadu be reminded that
Srilanka is a sovereign State.
Let the Tamil political party not make it for a case seperation
from Union of India to form Tamil Eelam including Tamil Nadu and
part of Sri Lanka.
The same had happened before if you consider the case of seprate
Khalistan out of Punjab. Then grew the insurgency.
Tamils should have their Ealam. They can never hope to have justice and fairplay in Srilanka. We should support their demand for referendum. With the Tamil-question unresolved, the country will never be at peace with itself.
Keep up the pressure on New Delhi. We will await the turn of Selvi Jayalalitha for her views on this. The majority of South Indian Tamils seem united on Eelam Tamils political future. It's practically impossible to co-exist as a nation for Tamils in the island.
Referendum should include all those left the country due to discrimanation on education & land settlement in the seventies and eighties and also as refugees due to the civil war for the last 30 odd years.
