Injunction on order barring power purchase extended

March 10, 2012 01:38 am | Updated 01:38 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court on Friday extended till March 16, the interim injunction it had granted last week on an order prohibiting high tension power consumers from buying power from third parties.

Nearly 150 HT consumers are likely to be benefited by the order, it is stated.

Justice K. Venkataraman had passed the interim order on petitions from various units. He had restrained the authorities from preventing HT consumers covered under different petitions from buying and consuming power from third party sources to meet their electricity requirements during power holidays and spells of load-shedding.

The petitioners had challenged the instructions of the Chief Engineer/Commercial dated February 25 introducing additional restrictions and control measures on HT industrial and commercial services.

The order prohibited purchase of third party power as well as exchange power during power holidays and load shedding period and further prohibited the banked wind energy for adjustment up to March 31. The injunction was till Friday.

Mr. Justice Venkataraman said the interim order passed in each of the matters would continue till March 16 on the condition that the petitioners should undertake through their counsel that they would not consume more power than what they purchased from third party sources. If the petitioners used more than the power purchased from the sources, the authorities were at liberty to take action against the units in accordance with the regulations.
